G. S. ANDRUS. HOOD FOR GAPBS OR OTHER GARMENTS. APPLICATION FILED MAY 2, 1910.
981,738. Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
UNITED ;-STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE S. ANDRUS, OF HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO APSLEY RUBBER COMPANY, OF HUDSON, MASSACHUSETTS,
A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
-'(0OD FOR CAPES OR OTHER GARMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
' Application filed May 2, 1910. Serial No. 558,785.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen SUANDRUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have. invent-ed certain new and useful Improvements in Hoods for Capes or other Garments; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to.
.which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in head coverings and more particularly to that type of head coverings which form a part of an outer garment and are connected with the body portion of the same.
I have shown my invention in connection with the hood of a waterproof cape of the type which is usedextensively by women and children for outdoor wearbut I wish to have it understood thatcertain features. of the invention are also well adapted to various other types of head covering used either with or without the body portion of the outer garment.
One objectof my invention is to provide mounted upon the head covering, which will protect the eyes of the wearer when desired and which may be concealed from view when not in use.
A further object of my invention is to )rovide an improved vizor which will c011- form closely to the head of the wearer without undue pressure.
lVith the above objects in view, my invention consists of certain features and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more specifically described in the specification and defined in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of an outer garment embodying the features of the invention in their preferred forms; Fig. 2 shows the hood thrown back and the vizor concealed from view inside of the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing the improved attaching means for fastening the vizor to the hood.
My invention is preferably used in connection with an outer garment comprising a waterproof cape 1 and avhood 2 attached thereto- This hood is provided .with an elastic 3 which is inserted in the hem adjacent to the front edge of the hood and serves to draw the sides of the hood together and hold it in position upon the head. This type of garment is employed extensively by women and children for outdoor wear. The
hood alone, however, offers no protection whatever to the eyes of the wearer and a great deal of discomfort is experienced in automobiling, driving, etc., where no protection is offered the eyes from the rays of the sun or from the rain beating in the wearers face. I overcome this objection by providing the hood with a Vizor 4 which is attached to the front portion of the hood and projects outwardly from the same to protect the eyes from the sun or ram. The vizor consists of a sheet of flexible material 5 inserted between two outer covering layers of cloth 6. The sheet 5 may be waterproofed and is stiff enough to hold the vizor in its extended position relatively to the head. At the same time it is sufficiently flexible to allow the vizor to conform to the front of the head. and fit closely thereto, this result being aided by the action of the elastic 3. The covering cloth 6 is folded around both sides of the stiffening sheet 5 and the ends of the cloth are-fastened together by two separated rows of stitches at 7 and 8. The row of stitches 8 also passes through the hood 2 attaching the Vizor to the hood ust back of the elastic 3. It will be seen that as the stiff portion of the vizor 4 is notfastened .directly to the hood, but is attached through its connection with the cloth covering 6, the
connection between the vizor and hood will be flexible and allow the vizor to be turned inward and folded back against the inside of the hood and concealed fromview. The
vizor may be folded within the hood when.
the hood is being used to cover the head and it is not desired to use the vizor, or it may be folded within the hood so that it will not detract from the graceful appearance of the hood when it is thrown over the shoulders and is not in use.
I wish it understood that the various fea- Y tures of the invention are not limited in'this application to the garment shown and described but may be applied to other forms of wearing apparel.
Having thus specifically described a proferred form of my invention, what I claim portion forms a hinge to permit the vizor as new, is "to be turned back Within the hood and to lay 10 A garment having a hood, means in the closely against theiup'per portion thereof.
front edge of the hood to cause the same to l S ANDRUS 5 conform to the head of the wearer, and a flexible vizor having a rear unlinedstraight WVit-nesses: p v eedge secured to the-hood in the rear of such WALTER E. MERRILL, conforming means, whereby such unlined MJLTON T. BAILEY.
