3 Claims.

This invention relates to a box of the display type wherein the cover may be used as an easel for supporting the box in open display position. In making a display box of this general type, such as shown in my prior Patent No. 2,219,039, a rather complicated construction has been provided wherein the stock has been duplicated along certain portions and projecting edges are formed on the surface of the box.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a box of a more simple construction than that of my previous patent.

Another object of this invention is to provide a box which may have a smooth outer surface rather than one interrupted as shown in my prior patent.

Another object of the invention is to provide a box which may be formed in either a rectangular or curvilinear shape.

Another object of the invention is to provide a box the cover of which may have a smooth interior contour.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box formed in accordance with this invention and in finished form;

In proceeding with this invention, I provide a body section and a cover section. The bottom of the body section comprises two parts such as a bottom wall and a liner or a bottom and a false bottom, and the outer one of these two parts is divided with a hinge connection between them, one of these divided parts being secured to the cover at such location that the remainder of the body may swing into the cover which may telescope over the body and form a closure therefor.

With reference to the drawings and particularly Figures 1 to 3, the body section is designated generally Ill and the cover generally The cover section comprises a top wall 25 with downwardly depending enclosing walls 26 which extend from the periphery of the top wall 25.

The body section in has a bottom wall of two plies the outer bottom wall or ply l2 and a liner or inner ply |3 with upstanding enclosing walls l4 which extend upwardly from the liner and bottom wall at a location inwardly from the periphery |5 of the bottom wall. The liner I3 is of one continuous piece of material throughout its extent and is of a stiff formation so as to in effect provide a complete bottom for the body section. The outer bottom wall I 2, however, is divided into two sections 5 and H which are hinged together as at l8 such as by means of the paper covers l9 and 20 extending over the outer and inner surface of these two bottom wall sections. The section H is provided with a flange 2|, as shown in Figure 3, the flanges 2| being of a depth equal to the extent of the enclosing walls 26 of the cover. This section II is placed within the cover I and a liner 21 extends from one end of the flange 2| about the enclosing wall 26 to the other end of the flange 2|, thereby causing the inner surface of the enclosing wall 26 to be uniform in thickness throughout its extent. The section I! of the bottom wall is of a dimension at right angles to its edge 28 something less than the height of the wall 26 so that the body portion which protrudes beyond the bottom section l6 may extend into the cover, as shown in Figure 2, and swing into the cover to closed position.

In the showings in Figures 5 to 8, the body is designated generally 30 and the cover 3|. In this case the structure is similar to Figures 1-4, the cover being provided with a top wall 32 with enclosing walls 33 depending from the periphery of the wall 32. The body 30 has a bottom wall 34 and a liner 35 extending over the entire area of the body. The bottom wall, however, is divided into sections 36 and 31 with a hinge connection at 38 between. This hinge connection may be formed by means of a paper cover 39 which extends over the bottom surface of both sections 36 and 31.

The section 31 has flanges 40 which extend into the cover substantially the depth of the enclosing wall 33 which flanges are secured in such position. The body has upstanding enclosing walls 4| extending upwardly from the liner 35 over which the depending walls of the cover telescope.

The section 31 is of a height somewhat less than the height of the enclosing walls 33 of the cover so that a portion of the body projects into the cover and will swing into the cover from the open position shown in Figure 5 to closed position shown in Figure 7.

The walls of the box are suitably covered with paper as shown in the section of Figure 6 to enhance the. appearance of the box.

I claim:

1. A box comprising a cover having a top wall with depending enclosing walls, a body having a bottom wall with inner and outer plies, said inner ply having upstanding enclosing walls about its peripheral edge to telescope within said upstanding walls when the body and cover are in closed position, said outer ply being divided into two sections with adjacent edges of said sections hinged together, one section covering a major portion of the inner ply and fixed thereto and having its hinged edge spaced inwardly from one peripheral edge of the inner ply, the other section being free from the inner ply with flanges extending therefrom along and in contact with the inner surface of said enclosing depending walls and secured thereto to hold the cover and body in attached relation, the division of said outer ply being so proportioned that the said in- 4 ward spacing of the hinged edges of the sections is less than the height of the depending enclosing walls so that the body may swing to and from the cover for closed or open position.

5 2. A box as in claim 1 wherein said flanges are the dimension of said depending walls to extend to the top wall, and a liner along the remaining portion of the depending walls. in abutting relation with the edges of the flanges.

10 3. A box as in claim 1 wherein said inner ply is one-piece which is substantially the combined area of said two sections to provide a portion to extend into the cover when the box is open.
