Description

April 1949- D. YOUNG 2,466,346
DISPLAY BOX Filed Sept. 9, 1947 .Zemis Patented Apr. 5, 1949 res ATEINTA OFFICE to Douglas Young, Island Inc., a corporation of Rhode Application September 9, 1947, Serial No. 772,930
2 Claims. (Ci. 206-4523) This invention relates to a display box of the general type shown in my Patent No. 2,219,039, dated October 22, 1940, and which is also illustrated in a somewhat simpler form in my copending application Serial No. 620,030, filed October 3, 1945.
The display boxes which are illustrated in the above-mentioned patent and application both employ a supporting section in addition to the cover and body sections, making a three-part construction which requires substantial manufacturing and assembly operations.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a display box which will be much simpler in construction than either of the above-mentioned boxes of said patent or application.
Another object of this invention is to provide a display box which may be assembled with fewer assembly operations and yet a box which will have substantially all of the advantages of the display box of either of the above-mentioned structures in said patent or application.
Another object of this invention is to provide a box which will be of less expensive construc-' tion by reason of the simplicity above mentioned.
'Another object of this invention is to provide a display box which may have provided in it a display pad which may be easily removed from a the box with the merchandise attachedthereto.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved display box in open position and with a display pad therein;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on substantially line 22 of the box shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrated in modified form;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a filler member which is located within one portion of the box.
In proceeding with this invention, I utilize a body section and a cover section which are somewhat of conventional form and modify the body section by dividing the bottom wall into two parts and secure one part fixedly to the cover section while leaving the other part free to swing. By
this arrangement, the swinging part may be opened to be supported by its hinge on the fixed part in an inclined position raised from the supporting surface the amount of the dimension of the width of the part which is fixed to the cover when in open position so that the contents of the 2 body section may be nicely displayed; and, yet, this body section may be easily swung into the cover section to be completel housed by the cover section.
With reference to the drawings, l0 designates generally the body section and H the cover section. The cover section is provided with a top wall I! having one set of opposite side walls I3 and i4 and another set of opposite sidewalls l5 and i6. These side walls are at right angles to the top wall and extend downwardly therefrom. A finger opening I! is provided in the side wall i3 for convenience in operation of the box.
The body section has a bottom wall divided into two parts designated I8 and I9 which division is along a line parallel to one of the side walls, such as M of the cover. These two parts are hinged together by a paper hinge 20 which may extend along the entire surface of the bottom wall to form a covering therefor. The bottom wall part i8 is provided with a wall M which will telescope with the wall l4 and is also provided with opposite side walls 22 which telescope with the side walls l5 and I6. Some cement or other attaching means may be utilized for securing the wall M to the wall It and walls 22 to the walls i5 and I6 so as to fixedly secure this part of the bottom wall in position, such .as shown in Figs. 1, 2 or 3. The bottom wall part I0 is provided with a side wall section 24 and opposite side walls 25 along the periphery of the bottom wall part 89, and it may swing'about the hinge connection into telescoping relation with the side walls l5 and I 6 andthe side wall I 3 of the cover section; thus, this body may be either in open position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, or in closed position when swung about the hinge connection.
A paper covering 26 may extend over the top wall 82 of the cover section II and extend over the side walls l3, I4, [5 and I6 and-about the edges as illustrated in Fig. 2. Likewise, the cover 20, which forms the hinge, may extend about the side walls of the two parts of the bottom wall and over the edges thereof as at 20' so as to completely cover the bottom section.
A display pad designated 30 and covered with some plush or pile fabric 3| may be removably positioned in the body section along the bottom wall part l9. This pad will be of a length, such as shown in Fig. 1, to extend between the walls 25 and may be ofa width which is substantially equal to the width of both the bottom wall parts l8 and I9 so as to extend out over the space between the walls 22. Thus, when the box is closed,
' assesses ,3 the overhanging portion 32 or this pad will extend into this space betweenthe walls :2.

illustrated in F18. 3. Flushes at II will also be provided on this display pad ll.
In Fig. 3, I also provide a flange 40 which will engagethe edges of the side walls oi the cover so as to limit the insertion of the body into the cover oi the box.
I claim: .1. In a box, a cover section and a similar body section telescopingly fitting within the cover section when in closed position, said cover section having a top wall and two sets 01. opposite side walls, said body section having a bottom wall di- 1 41 1 vided parallel to' one oi' said side walls along a hingeline into two parts, the side walls or said A body beingsevered along a line joining the ends of said hinge line, the corresponding opposed side walls on one side of said line of severance only being ilxedjo the cover in said telescopic relation and the other part having a side wall on the *side opposite said hinged edge and opposite side wall'adjacent thereto to swing into telescoping relation to said cover section when closed or when open to incline the body section and cover on a supporting surface. I
-2. ma box as in claim 1 wherein a display pad is carried in the body section part which swings relative to the cover section.
