Tedeschi, Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., assignor to Dennison Manufacturing Company, Framingham, Mass, a corporation of Massachusetts Filed Mar. 16, 1961, Ser. No. 96,157 6 Claims. (Cl. 229-44) While this invention is particularly applicable to cardboard boxes it is applicable to any box having cupped top and bottom parts hinged together at the abutting edges of their rear walls and having a filler in the bottom portion, such as a jewelry pad, which projects above the edges of the cupped bottom.
Objects of the invention are to provide a box of this kind in which the cover will automatically stand either fully or partially open and which is simple and economical in construction.
According to this in ention the portion of the tiller which extends above the back of the box has an opening therein and the cover has a tongue which slides through the opening to hold the cover in open position. Preferably the filler has ends telescoping into the box and the edges of the tongue rub on the ends of the filler respectively. In the preferred embodiment the aforesaid opening is provided by making the filler without a back, and the aforesaid tongue comprises a strip of cardboard or other sheet material cemented to the inner face of the rear wall of the cover.
For the purpose of illustration a typical embbodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a plan view with a part of the cover broken away;
FIG. 2 is an isometric view with parts broken away; and
FIG. 3 is a central section from front to rear with the cover partly open.
The particular embodiment of the invention chosen for the purpose of illustration comprises a box 1 having a rear wall 2, a cover 3 having a rear wall 4, the rear walls being hinged together with a strip 5 of fabric or the like cemented to the outer faces of the walls in usual manner. The box and cover may also be covered with fabric or other decorative material in usual manner. Mounted in the box is a filler 6 having end walls 7 and a front 8 telescoping into the box but no back, thereby leaving an opening 9 into the filler above the edge of the rear wall 2 of the box. The filler may have a well 10 of suitable size and shape to receive the particular article to be mounted in the box.
According to this invention a strip 11 of cardboard or the like is cemented or otherwise fastened to the inner face of the back 4 of the cover with its lower end projecting into the filler through the opening 9 in the form of a tongue. The tongue extends the full length of the box so that its end edges 12 rub on the inner faces of the ends 7 of the filler. By virtue of this frictional engagement between the edges of the tongue and the ends of the tiller the cover will stand in any position throughout an arc of 90.

I claim:
1. A box having a back, a cover having a rear wall hinged to the back, a filler having end walls telescoping into the box, the tiller having a portion extending above the back, said portion having an opening at the back thereof, and a stiff tongue fast to said wall and extending through said opening, an edge of the tongue engaging one of said end walls frictionally to hold the cover in open position.
2. A box having a back, a cover having a rear wall hinged to the back, a filler having end walls telescoping into the box, the filler having a portion extending above the back, said portion having an opening at the back thereof, and a stiff tongue fast to said wall and extend ing through said opening, the edges of the tongue engaging said end Walls respectively, thereby to hold the cover in open position.
3. A box having a back, a cover having a rear wall hinged to the back, a filler having end walls telescoping into the box, the filler having a portion extending above the back, the tiller having no back so that said portion has an opening at the back thereof, and a stiff tongue fast to said wall and extending through said opening, an edge of the tongue engaging one of said end walls frictionally to hold the cover in open position.
4. A box having a back, a cover having a rear wall hinged to the back, a filler having end walls telescoping into the box, the filler having a portion extending above the back, said portion having an opening at the back thereof, and a stiff tongue cemented to the inner face of said wall and extending through said opening, an edge of the tongue engaging one of said end walls frictionally to hold the cover in open position.
5. A box having a back, a cover having a rear wall hinged to the back, a filler having end walls telescoping into the box, the filler having a portion extending above the back, the filler having no back so that said portion has an opening at the back thereof, and a stiff tongue cemented to the inner face of said wall and extending through said opening, an edge of the tongue engaging one of said end walls frictionally to hold the cover in open position.
6. A box having a back, a cover having a rear wall hinged to the back, a filler having end walls telescoping into the box, the filler having a portion extending above the back, said portion having an opening at the back thereof, and a stiff tongue cemented to the inner face of said wall and extending through said opening, the edges of the tongue engaging said end walls respectively, thereby to hold the cover in open position,
