Description

Patented Oct. 14, 1924.
UNITED STATES LILLIAN GOODMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BOX.
Application filed May 5, 1923. Serial No. 636,898.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LILLIAN GOODMAN, a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to boxes or like containers, particularly such as are made of cardboard, pasteboard or like material. My invention relates especially to boxes or other containers suitable for containing balls of thread, yarn, or like material, and aims to provide articles of the character designated which shall be simple in construction, requiring few manipulations and a minimum of material for this purpose, which shall. contain the objects intended to be contained therein in a convenient and readily accessible manner; and'which shall embody certain novel and convenient features of construction which render the devices of the present invention very neat and attractive in appearance, very satisfactory in use, and in considerable demand in the market.
In the accompanying specification I shall describe, and in the annexed drawing show, an illustrative embodiment of the present invention. It is, however, to be clearly understood that my invention is not limited to the illustrative embodiment thereof herein shown and described for purposes of illustration only.
Referring to the drawings, wherein the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is a plan View of a blank for one form of outer box member which may be used in connection with the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 of a blank for one form of inner box member which may be used in connection with the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Figs. 1 and 2 of a blank for one form of reenforcing means whichmay be used in connection with the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention; and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one end of the completed box, showing the box slightly open, with the inner and outer box members and reenforcing means in assembled positions.
end and is, in the usual case, of substantially rectangular cross-section. The inner box member 20 is of the tray type adapted to be received by, and to slide within, the outer open ended box member 10.
The outer box member 10 consists of a blank, generally designated by reference character 11, and comprising the side por tions 12 and 13, the top and bottom portions 14 and 15, respectively, and the end portion tabs 12, 1
to facilitate the assembly of the outer box member by the use of suitable adhesive, for the production of the finished outer box member shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing.
a A and 16, may be provided The inner box member 20 consists of a blank, generally designated by reference character 21, and comprising the bottom portion 22, the side portions 23 and 24, and the front and rear end portions 25 and 26, respectively. One of the two end portions 25 and 26, preferably the front end portion 25, is provided with one or more finger holes 25, for a purpose subsequently to be described in greater detail. The inner box member blank 21 is provided with any suitable means, such as the tabs 23 and 24', for enabling the assembly of the inner box member in the form shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. This assembly may be eifected by the use of adhesive in the manner well known to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates.
The reenforcing means 30 is made of a blank generally indicated by reference character 31, and comprising'an end, such as the front end, reenforcing portion 32, the retaining portion 33, and the side tabs 34: and 35. The front end reenforcing portion 32 is provided with one or more finger holes 32', to correspond to the hole or holes 25 in the front end portion 25 of the inner box member 20. While any desired numer of finger holes 25 and 32' may be employed, I prefer to use two finger holes in each of the portions 25 and 32, respectively, as illustrated.
The reenforcing means is applied to the inner box member 20, preferably after the same has been assembled, as by attaching the front end reenforcing portion 32 to the inner face of the front end portion 25 of the inner box member 20. The side tabs 34 and are now attached, as by adhesive, to the inner faces of the side walls 23 and 24, respectively, along those portions of the side walls-23 and 24; which are adjacent the front end portion 25 of the inner box member 20. The retaining portion 33 will now be found to extend across the open end of the inner box member 20 adjacent the front end of the same. Preferably, the tabs 34 and 35 are of a length substantially equal to the width of the side members 23 and 24, so that the retaining strip or partition 33 will extend across the top of the inner box member or tray 20 substantially flush with the upper edge of the front end portion 25 of the inner box member 20.
The manner of assembling the device described above is substantially clear from the foregoing description. The advantages of the foregoing construction are numerous and of considerable practical importance. The box is very simple in construction, requires little material and few manipulations for its fabrication, and is exceedingly strong, thus enabling it to withstand hard usage in shipment and on the shelves of stores or other places where such boxes may be found. The box is also very neat and attractive in appearance, thus admirably adapting it for display purposes.
In use, the box possesses many important advantages over similar articles hitherto suggested for the same purpose. By means of the fingerhole or holes provided in the front end of the box, the slidable tray or inner box portion may readily be manipulated to permit the insertion or withdrawal of articles into or from the box. Such manipulation of the box is very convenient and renders the articles contained within the same readily accessible. The construction of the box also enables such articles as balls of thread, yarn or the like tobe stored therein with due regard for safety and cleanliness. The reenforcing means not only serves to strengthen the box as a whole but also to act as retaining means for preventing any undesired expulsion of the balls of yarn,
. thread or the like from the box.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A box member of the tray type comprising a bottom portion, side portions, and front and rear end portions, one of said end portions having one or more finger holes therein, in combination with a separate reenforcing member provided with an integral retaining member extending across the open end of said box member.
2. A box member of the tray type comprising a bottom portion, side portions, and
front and rear end portions, said front end the open end of said box member adjacent the front end portion thereof and attached to said side portions.
3. A box member of the tray type com-- prising a bottom portion, side portions, and front and rear end portions, one of said end portions having one or more finger holes therein, in combination with separate reenforcing means comprisingv an end reenforcing member having a finger hole or holes therein for cooperation with the finger hole or holes of said last-mentioned end portion, and a retaining member integral with said reenforcing means and extending across the open end of said box member.
4. A box member of the tray type comprising a bottom portion, side portions, and front and rear end portions, said front end portion having one or more finger holes therein, in combination with separate reenforcing means comprising an end reenforcing member having a finger hole or holes therein for cooperation with the finger hole or holes of said last-mentioned end portion, and a retaining member integral with said reenforcing means and extendin across the open end of. said box member ad jacent the front end portionthereof and attached to said side portions.
5. A box member of the tray type comprising a bottom portion, side portions, and
front and rear end portions, one of said end portions having one or more finger holes therein, in combination with reenforcing means comprising an end reen: forcing member having a finger hole or holes therein for cooperation with the finger. hole or holes of said last-men tioned end portion, a retaining member integral with said reenforcing means and extending across the open end of said box member, and a plurality of tabs associated with said retaining member for attachment of said reenforcing means to said side portions.
6. A box member of the tray type comprising a bottom portion, side portions, and
front and rear end portions, said front end a portion having one or more finger holes thereln, in combination with reenforcing means comprislng an end reenforclng member having a finger hole or holes therein,
for cooperation with the finger hole or associated With said retaining member for attachment of said reenforcing means to said side ortions.
7. Beeniorcing means for a box member of the tray type comprising a blank having a retaining member portion, and an end reenforcing member portion having one or more finger holes therein.
8. Reenforcing means for a box member 10 of the tray type comprising a blank having a retaining member portion, an end reenforcing member portion associated With said retaining member portion and having one or more finger holes therein, and attaching tabs also associated with said retaining member portion.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification this 18th day of April, 1923.
LILLIAN GOODMAN.
