Description

G. R. BROWN EASTER BASKET Sept. 29, 1953 Filed Aug. 50, 1950 I n uen tor Garfield R: Bra wn By WW 3% Patented Sept. 29, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE EASTER BASKET Garfield R. Brown, Eau Claire, Wis.
Application August 30, 1950, Serial No. 182,321
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in baskets, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a highly ornamental basket of the character herein described, which is particularly suited for use as an Easter basket, that is, for containing various types of toys, candies, et cetera, such as are customarily associated with Easter time.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision of a book which constitutes a component of the basket and which may be perused by a child for purposes of education or amusement after the contents of the basket are emptied.
Some of the advantages of the invention lie in its simplicity of construction, in its pleasing appearance, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in view and such other objects and features as may become apparent as the specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts'as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention, including the book;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 2-2 in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the subject shown in Figures 1 and 2, with the book removed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the basket is designated generally by the reference character 50, and comprises a boxshaped base 52 including a bottom 54, a pair of side walls 56 and a pair of end walls 58, the side walls 56 being equipped with suitable flaps or flanges 66 which are secured to the outer surfaces of the end walls 58 as shown.
In this preferred embodiment of the invention the end walls 58 are provided with a pair of plates 62 suitably secured to the inner surfaces of the respective end walls and these plates are formed with V-shaped notches, the upwardly divergent edges 64 of which afford cradles for the open book 28.
The upper edge portions of the plates 62 which are disposed at the sides of the cradles 64 are indicated at 66, and it is to be noted that the end walls 58 coact with the open book in constituting a receptacle.
Angulated flanges or flaps 68 are provided at the upper edges of the side walls 56 and extend downwardly and inwardly over the outer longitudinal edges 40 of the book covers and over the outer longitudinal edge portions of the book pages 30, the flaps 68 being quite adequate not only to sustain the book in position on the base,
2 but also sustain the book in its open position, as shown.
Needless to say, the flaps 68 may be readily bent upwardly and outwardly so as to facilitate removal of the book 28 from the base 52 when so desired. It will be appreciated that the receptacle provided by the above described assembly may be advantageously utilized in receiving candy, paper, grass and the like, arranged in any desired fashion so as to form an Easter basket. The book not only provides the bottom of the receptacle but is an additional gift in itself, being retained for reading after the basket is empty and discarded.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the claimed as new is:
A basket of the type described, comprising in combination, a box-shaped base having an open top and including a pair of end walls provided with V-shaped cradles, an open book positioned on said base and including a pair of covers having opposite end portions thereof seated in said cradles, said book affording a receptacle, and means on said base for retaining the book in position thereon, plates secured to inner surfaces of said end walls and provided with V-shaped recesses constituting said cradles, portions of said end walls adjacent said recesses being disposed at the opposite ends of said book and coacting therewith in defining said receptacle, said means comprising downturned flaps provided at upper edges of opposite side walls of said base and overlapping outer longitudinal edge portions of said covers.
