HINGED PAPER BXFWIAZH HINGE CVERlNG Lewis Douglas Young, Providence, R. l., assigner to Douglas Young, Inc., a corporation of Rhode island Application November 30, 1953, Serial No. 394,964
1 Claim. (Cl. 229-44) This invention relates to a hinged cardboard box having an ornamental hinge covering flap.
Cardboard boxes have been formed in two sections with the body section and cover section hinged by a metal hinge. In the provision of boxes of this character, it has been usual to provide some outer paper cover with pads in each of the sections obscuring the uncovered inner surface of the sections and with a ap on the pad within the cover section extending over the hinge to hide the same from View and to enhance the inside appearance of the box. The pad in the body section serves the utilitarian purpose of mounting the merchandise, such as jewelry, which is contained within the box, but the pad in the cover section is there to provide a liap for covering the hinge and incidentally also providing a cover to enhance the inner surface of the cover of the box.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a construction in which the hinge may be covered by a ap and yet there need be no pad inserted in the cover of the box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a covering for the inside cover of the box in a machine operation the same as the machine covering of the outside or" the section, while a flap is secured at the time the hinge is assembled on the cover section.
Another object of the invention is to provide a flap which will be heldin place by the hinge and secured at the time of assembling the hinge on the cover section, while the other end of the flap may be secured by the pad which mounts the merchandise and which is positioned Within the body section of the box.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
in the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective view of the box in open position with a section of a pad located in the body section being broken away;
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure l showing the ap in raised position and the pad in the body section removed;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the pad which is inserted in the body section;
Figure 4 is a central sectional view through the box in closed position;
Figure 5 is a sectional view showing a position in the assembly of the flap and hinge with the back walls of the body and cover sections.
In proceeding with this invention, I form similar body and cover sections of cardboard and provide an outer ornamental cover of sheet material such as paper cloth or fabricoid for each of the sections and also provide a similar cover for the inner surface of the cover section all by machine operations before the two sections are joined together by a metal hinge. A metal hinge is utilized for securing the sections in hinged relation, and just prior to the assembling of the hinge, I position a ilap of sheet material along the inner surface of the cover section so that the prongs of the hinge will pass through this ap at the time the hinge is secured to the back Wall of the cover section so that this ilap is held in place. The usual pad is then inserted in the body section and s erves to frictionally hold the ap over the hinge as the pad is frictionally held in the body of the box.
With reference to the drawings, 1t) designates generally the body section and 11 the cover section. The body section has an outer cover of ornamental sheet material designated generally 12, which extends along the outside bottom of the box and along the upstanding front wall 13, back wall 14, and opposite side walls 15, the cover lapping over the upper edge of these walls and extending along the inner surface of the upstanding walls to the lower edge thereof. It does not extend across the inner surface of the bottom wall 16 of the box.
The cover section of the box is covered with the ornam-ental sheet material along the inside top wall of the box as at 17 and is also covered along the outer top surface of this wall at 17 and along the downwardly extending front wall 1S, rear wall 19, and side Walls 2il--2tl. The outside cover laps over the edge of the downwardly extending walls and extends over the inner surface to the upper edge thereof. Thus, both inner and outer surfaces of the cover are covered with ornamental sheet material.
The ap designated generally 21, also formed of this ornamental sheet material, is positioned with a portion 22 along the downwardly extending back Wall 19 of the cover 11i when the cover is to be assembled with the hinge 23 consisting of a plate 24 with integral prongs to engage the inner surface of the Wall 19 and a plate 25 to engage the inner surface of the upstanding back wall 14. The two sections 16 and 11 are then positioned on an anvil 26 (see Figure 5) and a hammer 27 then strikes these two sections and hinge when in the position shown in Figure 5 so that the prongs of the hinge plate are driven through the flap and the back wall 19 and also through the back Wall 14 so as to hingedly relate the sections as shown in Figures l, 2, and 4. By this step in the assembly a ap 21 is securely held in position, while the inner surface of the top wall of the box is also ornamented by the cover thereover.
To complete the box, a pad 28 as shown in Figure 3 having a deck Z9 for mounting jewelry or the like with downwardly extending sides 3@ and 31 of such dimension that they will frictionally engage the opposite upstanding walls of the body section and be held therein, while the liap 21 has its lower portion 32 held between the pad 23 and the hinge plate 25 so as to hold this flap in covering relation with the hinge and yet permit the sections of the box to swing from one position to the other as occasion may demand.
I claim:
A hinged box comprising a cardboard body section having an outer paper cover and an upstanding back wall, a cardboard cover section having inner and outer paper covers and a depending back wall, a metal hinge comprising a pair of plates, means for securing one plate to one back. Wall and means for securing the other plate to the other back wall, and a tiap of sheet material secured between one hinge plate and the back wall of the cover section by the means securing the plate thereto and extending upwardly along the cover and then back upon itself and over the hinge, a pad in frictional engagement with said walls of the body section and the other end of the flap extending between the pad and the body section to hold the ap in hinge-covering relation, thereby enhancing the appearance of the inside of the box.
