J. M. sHlELns J EWELERY BOX Filed Feb, 12, 1932 Patented May 2, 1933 litipllidw FFECE JOHN IE. SHELDS, F CHICAGO, RLLENOIS, ASSIG-NOR T F. H. NOBLE & COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOES, A CORPGRATQN OF ILLINOIS JEWELRY BOX Application iled February 12, 1952. Serial No. 592,556.
My invention relates to ornamental covered boxes of the kind used as containers 'for jewclry and other small articles. lts object is to provide a simply constructed but desirable container of the class mentioned having the edges of the sides of its body and cover members provided with meeting fianged sheet metal rim members which shall present a neat finish, serve to hold the covering of the parts of the box in place, and provide a seat for reception or" the lining of the lid, or display pad or otl er holder ci' the body of the box. My invention resides in the construction and arrangement of such flanged rim member with relation to associated parts of the box structure, the essential elements thereof being more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
0f the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective of' the box with the cover member raised;
Fie". 2 is a vertical Section of the same;
Fig. 3 is a peispective of the bottom rim member detached, and
Fig. 4l is a vertical cross-section of the box7 the plane of the section being indicated by the dotted line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The body l, and cover 2, of the box may be suitably formed of sheet metal, and in the box illustrated the body member vis designed to receive a coverec display pad 3 formed with atransverse slot 4t suitable to receive a linger ring. Both portions or" the box are covered with an ornamental facing material 5 as of velvet or similar fabric which is carried around the edge of the peripheral side portion of the particular member and preferably is cemented to the inner face of suoli portion. As usual in such containers the cover member is hinged to the body by a spring hinge 6 of suitable construction.
The rim members '.7 and 7a respectively associated with the cover and body members are in the present instancm though not necessarily as to details, of precisely the same construction7 the parts of the body member corresponding to those of the cover being distinguished by the exponent e.
Describing the rim member of the cover,
such rim is formed with a face portion 8 lying in a substantially horizontal plane, which plane portion is connected with an upwardly-extending flange portion 9 provided at the top with a set of outwardly bent tongues l0 and a set of inwardly bent tongues ll. The tongues l0 recurve downwardly towards the face portion 8 at such a distance and at such an angle to the side portion of the cover member of the box as to make secure frictional engagement therewith and hold the rim securely in place over the interposed marginal portion of the fabric 5. The face portion 8 of the rim, as illustrated may be covered with a facing material 12 which covers all the exposed portions of the rim and extends on both sides part way (or entirely) across the flange 9.
Opposite the hinge 6, it will be noted7 the tace portion 8 and flange 9 are cut away to accommodate the hinge, a iinishing strip 20 which extends over the hinge and at its opposite ends extends between the adjacent portions of the rim members and portions of the body and cover of the box severally being employed to conceal the hinge and provide a neat finish.
he inwardly bent tongues provide means for fastening to the cover member an ornamental lining 13 of a suitable material, such as silk7 or satin, which extends at its edge upwardly around tl e outside of a collar il fitting' within the flange 9 and clamped thereto by the inwardly bent tongues il. It' desired, however7 *ne construction and lit ting of the parts may be such that the collar will be retained within the flange 9 by frictional engagement7 the tongues 1l serving only as stops to position the parts.
The rim member (3 of the body member of the box is of the same construction as' that of the rim section of the cover, and differs in arrangement only in being inverted with reference to the rim member ot' the cover.
The particular box illustrated, however, is
tending flange 9ab of the rim member. To provide a bottom support for this pad, I employ a supporting plate 17 which is formed with a channel 18 opposite the lower end of the ring slot in the pad and which serves to elevate the rear end of the plate and position the plate in the inclined position of the bottom of the pad, while also providing space to accommodate the lower portion of the ring.
I claim:
l. In combination with a. box member having a peripheral side portion, a rim member having a plane face portion extending over the edge of said side portion of the box member and a fiange po-rtion spaced inwardly from said side portion, and a collar fitting within said flange portion of the rim member, said flange portion being formed withl tongues arranged to cooperate with said side portion of the box member and with other tongues arranged to position said collar in said rim member.
2. A box structure according to claim l in which said other tongues therein mentioned are bent into clamping engagement with said collar.
3. The combination of a box member having a peripheral side portion, a fabric covering extending around the edge of said side portion tothe inner face thereof, a rim member having a plane face portion extending over the covered edge of said side portion of the box member and a flange portion spaced inwardly from said side portion, said flange portion being formed with outwardly extending tongues arranged to clamp the margin of said covering to said side portion of tlie box.
4. A jewelry box including a body member and a cover member, said members both having peripheral side portions and being hinged together' along corresponding edges of said portions, a pair of rim members severally having plane face portions cut away opposite the hinge joint and extending over the edges of said side portions of the box member and having also flange portions spaced inwardly from the side portions of the box members, said flange portions being formed with outwardly extending tongues arranged to frictionally cooperate with the side portions of the associated box members, and a finishing strip arranged over said hinge joint and having its opposite ends severally interposed between the two box members and the rim members severally associated therewith.
5. A container for displaying a finger ring includingl box body members formed to provide at the top a marginal lface lying in a plane inclined downwardly from the rear and a pad socket extending downwardly from said face, a display pad formed with a transverse ring slot rearwardly of its center, and a supmy name.
