DISPLAY BOX WITH PIVOTED CLOSURE Filed 00%.. 3, 1945 INVENTOR Z 6 w Z'$- D ogwg/as yak/7y Patented Apr. 19, 1 949 DISPLAY BOX WITH PIVOTED CLOSURE Lewis Douglas Young, Providence, R. I., assignor to Douglas Young, Inc.-, a corporation of Rhode Island Application October 3, 1945, Serial No. 620,031
- 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a box of the type which is designed to remain open for some length of time to display the contents thereof.
Boxes usually comprise a body and a cover for the body which is, in some cases, hinged to the body. In such cases, if it is desired to have the cover stand upright in a vertical position, usually some sort of a ribbon is attached between the cover and the body so as to limit the angular swingin movement of the cover about its hinge connection to the body to little greater than 90 degrees.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a construction of cover and body so that the cover may be maintained at 90 degrees or in vertical relation to the body without the use of a ribbon or some flexible attaching means between the two.
Another object of this invention is to provide a cover and body of such relation that the cover is well supported on the body when in closed position.
Another object of this invention is to provide a construction which will be of simple arrangement and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the box with the cover closed which is made in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a view of the box with the cover open;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the box in closed position but in inverted relation to show the hinge between the cover and the body;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the cover in inverted relation; and
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of a fragmental portion of the body and cover with a hinge connection between the two.
In proceeding with this invention, I provide a body with upstanding walls with the back wall high enough to engage the cover and support the same. The cover is provided with depending walls to abut three of the upstandin walls of the body, while the back wall of the cover is of a length to lie in overlapping relation to the back wall of the body and extends substantially the entire depth of the box from the top wall to the bottom wall. A hinge connects the depending back wall with the bottom wall so that the hinge line will be substantially at the rear edge of the bottom wall of the body.
With reference to the drawings, the body section is designated generally [0 and the cover sec tion is designated generally H. The body section comprises a bottom wall [2 with upstanding end walls l3 and M, a front wall l5, and a rear wall or back wall It. The back wall l6 extends to a height greater than the height of the end walls or front wall, as shown in Fig. 2, and is suilicient so as to engage the inner surface of the top wall of the cover to support the same. An inner lip l8 extends about the end walls l3 and I4 and the front wall l5 and may also extend along the back wall l6, although not necessarily so. This lip provides a guide for the cover section.
The cover section It consists of a top wall 20 with end walls 2| and 22 and a front wall 23, while there is a back wall also depending from the top wall 20, which is designated 24, and which is of a height so as to extend from the top wall to the bottom wall when the cover is disposed in closed position as shown in Fig. 1. In closed position, the edges of the walls 2|, 22, and 23 engage the edges of the walls l3, l4, and I5 in abutting relation as shown in Fig. 1, while the back depending wall 24 overlies the back upstanding wall l5 so that these lie one over the other in overlapping relation.
A flexible hinge of sheet stock 25 is secured, such as by cementing, at 26 to the bottom wall l2 and also secured as at 21 to the depending back wall 24 of the cover if. A short space 28 between the end of the wall 24 and the wall l6 (as shown in Fig. 5), provides the hinge line for swingingly connecting the cover to the body, and is adjacent the lower back edge of the bottom wall.
If it is desired to open the box, the cover II is swung about its hinge connection, and the depending back wall 24 will lie in a plane substantially the same as the plane of the bottom l2. The enlarged or lengthened depending back wall will serve as a support to maintain the cover H upright as shown in Fig. 2.
In some cases, it may be desirable to place some sort of trimming within the box, and I have illustrated at 30 a satin cover over some sort of cotton material 3|, suitably held in place by a wall 32. The top of the box, of satin 33, is stuffed with cotton 34 to also provide a cushion for this portion of the box.
I claim:
A box comprising a body section having a bottom and upstanding end and back and front walls, said end and front walls having an inside lip projecting upwardly therebeyond, and said back wall being of a height at least the height of the lip, a cover section having a top and depending end, and back and front walls, the back dependin wall being rigid and of a length to extend from the top wall to the bottom wall when the sections are in closed position to overlie and substantially contact the back wall of the body section, said front wall and end walla oi the cover telescoping said lip and: being in edge to edge abutting relation with the front and end walls of the body section, and a hinge of flexible wall as a hinge line to dispose. said demndinfl: back. 15
wall in the plane of the bottom wall on a supportin surface to hold the cover upright, said hinge being the sole hinge for the cover.
