type which is made wholly of cardboard.
Heretofore, display boxes have been in various forms in which when the cover is lifted, the contents of the box are exposed to view. Sometimes the cover is entirely removed from the body of the box and used to tilt the box for the display of the contents.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide an arrangement in the box so that when the cover of the box is lifted or swung about its hinge connection to the body, the merchandise or articles which are contained within the body of the box will be lifted with relation to the body of the box so as to be displayed at an angle which will be more effective than were the merchandise Within the body of the box lying on a surface parallel to that which supports the box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is made entirely of cardboard with hinge connections of the parts formed by folding the cardboard or scoring it so that it may be swung about the score line as a hinge connection.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement so that when the cover of the box is swung from open to closed position, the contents which is being displayed will drop into the body of the box to be completely protected by the cover.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and yet effective construction which will be inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a perspective View of the box in open position;
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view showing the box in closed position and the plate which swings out of the body of the box lowered into the body in this housed position.
In proceeding with this invention I have provided a body section and a cover section therefor, and in the body section I have located a plate which is hinged along the front wall of the body section, and I have provided an arm which is connected by links to the body section and to the cover section so that as the cover is swung from closed to open position, the plate will be lifted or swung about its hinge connection so as to present it at an angle to the bottom wall of the box and 2 thus more advantageously display any merchandise which may be attached to the plate.
With reference to the drawings, the body section of the box is designated l0, while the cover section is designated H. These sections are hinged together by any hinge means as may be desired such as a paper or cloth hinge. I
The body section comprises a bottom wall l2 having opposite side walls 13 and [4 with a front wall l5 and a back wall It. The cover section comprises a top wall I! with opposite side walls l8 and I9, a front wall 20, and a back wall 2i. A cloth hinge 22 is cemented along the outer surfaces of the back walls I6 and 2! to hingedly connect the back walls of the sections together. When in closed position, the upstanding walls of the body section engage in edge to edge abutting relation with the downwardly depending walls from the top Wall ll of the cover section. A lip 23 is secured about the inner surface of the upstanding walls l3, l4, l5, 16 of the body section so as to provide a guide over which the depending walls l8, I9, 20, 2| of the cover section may telescope and be guided into closed position.
Within the body section there is provided a plate 24 which is scored as at 25 to provide a hinge between the main portion of the plate and a portion 26 which is secured to the body section adjacent the front wall thereof and adjacent the junction of the front wall with the bottom wall. An upwardly extending reinforcement 21 extends along inside of the front and side walls of the body section while this portion 26 is positioned between this reinforcement and the front wall. The plate 24 is free at its edge 28 to swing upwardly about its hinge 25. An arm 29 is located beneath the plate, preferably centrally thereof, and is connected by a link 30 to the body section at substantially the junction of the bottom wall [2 and back wall I6, the securing being by means of a portion 3| connected to the link 30 by a score line 32 to provide this hinge relation, while the same type of connection 33 is provided to the arm 29 by a score line between the parts. A link 34 which may be formed of the same piece of cardboard as 29 is scored and folded as at 35 at the end of the arm 29 to provide a hinge connection therewith, while it is also scored as at 36 so that the portion 31 thereof may be secured to the inner under surface of the top wall of the box, thus connecting the link 34 at substantially the juncture of the top wall I1 and back wall 2| of the box.
By this arrangement when the cover is moved from the closed position shown in Figure 3 to the open position shown in Figure 2, the arm 29 will be drawn from the lowered position in the body, as shown in Figure 3, of the box to the position shown in Figure 2 by reason of the link arrangement so that the end of the arm 29 will engage, slide along, and swing the plate 24 about its hinge connection 25 into the inclined position shown in Figures 1 and 2. It will be apparent that when the cover is swung to its closed position from the open position, the movement will be reversed, dropping the plate into the body of the box with such articles as may be secured thereon.
A flexible tape 40 may limit the upward swinging movement of the cover about its hinge.
I claim:
1. A display box comprising a body section having a bottom wall with upstanding side, front, and back walls, a cover section having atop with depending side, front, and back walls, means for hinging the back walls of the body and cover sections together, a plate in the body section hinged adjacent and along an axis parallel to the front wall thereof with a free edge adjacent the back wall, an arm located beneath said plate, one end of said arm being adapted for sliding engagement with said plate, a link hingedly secured at one end to the cover section adjacent the juncture of the top and back walls and hingedly 4 connected at its other end to said one end of said arm, a second link hingedly secured at one end to the body section adjacent the junction of the bottom and back wall and also hingedly connected at its other end to the other end of said arm whereby when said cover is moved from closed to open position, the arm is swung upwardly engaging and lifting the plate, swinging it about its hinge connection.
2. A display box as in claim 1 wherein the links and arm are of a single piece of cardboard scored to be hingedly connected together in tandem relation.
3. A display box as in claim 1 wherein the links have portions folded at their ends to connect the links to the body and cover sections.
