(Cl. 22919) This invention relates to packaging and display devices for various types of merchandise incorporating a container having a tray movably supported therein, upon which merchandise is arranged. More particularly, the invention deals with a structure of the character defined, wherein means is employed for checking opening movement of the tray with respect to the container in the display of the merchandise supported on the tray.

Still more particularly, the invention deals with a structure of the character defined, comprising two die cut and scored blanks, namely a box or container blank and a tray blank.

The novel features of the invention will be best understood from the following description, when taken together with the accompanying drawing, in which' certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and, in which, the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views and, in which:

FIG. 1 is a diagrammatic plan view on a reduced scale showing, at the upper portion of the illustration, the tray in closed position and, in the lower portion, the tray in its extended and checked position, with part of the construction broken away and in section.

FIG. 2 is an enlarged and broken away section on the line 22 of FIG. 1 showing the tray in closed position and with parts of the construction broken away.

FIG. 3 is a partial section on the line 33 of FIG. 2 of one side portion only of the container, illustrating the tray in its open and checked position.

FIG. 4 is an inside plan view of the blank from which the box or container part is formed, with part of the construction broken away; and

FIG. 5 is a similar view of the blank of the tray part.

In illustrating one adaptation of the invention, represents the box or container part and 11 represents the tray part and the die cut and scored blanks of which are shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 of the drawing.

Considering FIG. 4, 12 represents the top wall of 10 and 13 represents the bottom wall joining the wall 12 in a side wall 14, the blank being scored, as seen at 15 and 16, in forming this arrangement of walls. Spaced with respect to the

15, 16 are other parallel scorings 15', 16', beyond which the blank has dual side wall members, namely an outer side wall 17 and a supplemental inner side wall 17, these walls being adhered together in forming the box or container construction. This attachment of the walls is indicated, in part, in the broken away portion of FIG. 1 of the drawing.

The closed end of 10 is formed by outer and inner end wall member 18, 18' foldable with respect to 12 and 13 on the score line 19. Between 18 and 18 and at the end of 14 is an end wall flap 20, a similar flap 21 being at one end of 17, these flaps being also foldable on the line 19. Both of these flaps are disposed inwardly of the walls 18, 18', the flap 21 being illustrated in FIG. 2 of the drawing.

At the opposed end of 14 is a rectangular stop flap 22 and a similar rectangular stop flap 23 is at the corresponding end of 17, these flaps being foldable on the score lines 24. At the open end of the box or container 10, the top and

Turning now to the die cut and scored blank forming the tray 11, the tray comprises a bottom wall 25 bordered by parallel side score lines 26, 27 and front and

30, 31; whereas, the flaps 35 are disposed on and secured to the outer surfaces of said walls and form the stop flaps of the tray, one of these flaps being shown in FIG. 3 of the drawing, engaging the stop flap 22 on the side wall 14. It will be understood that the flap 23 of the side wall 17 is also disposed upon the inner surface of 17 and will be engaged by the associated stop flap 35 on the opposed side of the tray from that shown in FIG. 3. By reason of the small size of the showing in FIG. 1, no attempt is made to illustrate this structure in FIG. 1, as will be clear from the illustration in FIG. 3. FIG. 2 is broken away, however, to show the stop 23.

The inner wall 33 of the tray has its upper edge cutaway, as seen at 36, clearly in FIG. 5 and in section in FIG. 2. The purpose of this cut away portion is to permit free passage of air from the closed end of the box or container in the inward movement of the tray, which preferably has a snug, but free, fit in the box or container part 10. Beyond the front end wall 32, the tray part 11 has an extending upper closure flap 37 foldable with respect to 32 on the score line 38. This flap extends into the container beyond the curved wall portions 12', 13' to seal the container and also to provide a finger grip of the upper and lower portions of the tray, facilitating outward sliding movement of the tray to its extended checked position, as shown at the bot tom of FIG. 1, and illustrated, in section, in FIG. 3.

By providing this checked construction, the tray maintains a definite coupled engagement with the box or container part 10; whereas, the merchandise supported on the tray can be moved into and extended to viewable and display position. In actual practice, it is intended that the merchandise arranged upon the tray will be displayed upon the outer surface of the top wall 12 of the box or container part and, with certain types and kinds of merchandise, the same can be displayed in a use position.

Devices of the type and kind under consideration can be used very practically in the merchandising, packaging and display of such articles of apparel as brassieres, girdles and the like and these can be displayed upon the outer surface of the top wall with the apparel shown on the body of the wearer and the article itself can be viewed by the purchaser by simply extending the tray for a closer inspection of the material and workmanship of the merchandise.

By providing a definite control and checking of the tray with respect to the box or container part, the two parts of the device are at all times maintained in coupled relationship with each other, which prevents loss or confusion in association of merchandise with respect to a given box or container and assures that garments of one type and kind as well as one size are kept in association with each other at all times.

Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
