Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. Yonve, a citizen of the United States. residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Display Boxes. of which the tl ollowing is a specification,

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in display boxes, and pertains more particularly to boxes of this type used for the purpose of displaying jewelry, cosmetics and the like, though obviously applicable to other articles.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a box of this character which involves merely a body and a pivoted or hinged lid, the lid being formed to lie at an incline and disposed to project partly within and partly without the box, and at the same time being movable to form a complete closure for the box.

A further object of the invention is to provide a box of this type or character which can be economically produced and which involves a minimum of material and parts.

Further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.

In proceeding in accordance with the present invention a box body 1 is employed, which is formed with a stationary part 2, the latter extending over the rear end of the box. and between the sides thereof. This part may be secured in stationary position in. any suitable manner, and occupies but a. small part of the top of the box body or in other words extends but a short distance from the rear end of the box body toward the front end thereof. A combined closure and article holder or carrier 3 is employed which latter has sides and ends a and 5 respectively carried by the top member 6.

The stationary part 2 extends at its sides and rear end slightly beyond the sides and rear end of the box body and a corresponding but movable part 7 is employed which Serial No. 466,91 7.

with the part 2 forms a con'iplete closure for the box body top, when part '7 is in lowered or closed position.

The part 7 is secured to the front or outer end part of the top member 6 so that the rear or inner end of the top member 6 projects beyond the inner end of the part '7. The part 7 has its front or outer end and. its

sides extending beyond the front or outer end 5 and the side flanges at to an extent equal to the extension of the sides and end of the stationary part 2, so that the parts '7 and 2 preserve or present a symmetrical appearance.

For the purpose of hingedly connecting the member 7 to the part 2, a piece of fabric 8 is employed suitably secured, as by adhesive, to the inner face of part 2 and likewise secured between the parts 6 and 7, as depicted in Figure 2.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the rear end of the cover member 6. will, when the cover is in closed position lie beneath and be concealed by the stationary part 2. This part 2- also serves to support the cover when the latter is in display position, and in such position, it will be apparent that the cover projects partly within and partly without the box body and has an inclined disposition.

l/Vhen the cover is in closed position the box has the same general appearance of an ordinary box and can be used to hold the article or articles to be displayed, and can be placed when so closed either in the position of Figures 2 or 3, or can be inverted so that the body 1 rests or seats upon the supporting surface.

As shown in Figure 1, when the box is in display position, the outer end of member 7 and the outer end of part 2 rest or seat upon the supporting surface, to thus sup port the box in the position of Figure 1, in which both the box and the movable cover are at an incline to the supporting surface, holding the article which is placed on or in the cover member 6 and between the flanges J and 5 thereof.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is t 1. In a box, a body having a stationary cover part at the rear end thereof, a movable cover part having side and end flanges receivable in the body, a hinge member se cured one end to the inner tace ot the stationary part and secured at its opposite end to the outer face of the cover part at points between the ends of the movable cover part so that when the latter is in closed position the rear end thereof will abut and lie opposite to the inner face of the stationary part, and a member secured. to the outer tace ot the movable cover part and extending over the said opposite end of the hinge member and engageable with the free edges of the opposite end of the body and with the free edges of the sides of the latter beyond the stationary cover part.

2. In a box, a body consisting of a bottom, sides and closed ends, a stationary cover part at one end of the box connected to the said end and to the adjacent parts of the sides, a movable cover having a top, sides and an end and being of substantially the same length as the length of the body and having its sides and end receivable between the sides and ends respectively of the body, and means to hinge the top of the cover at points intermediate its ends to the stationary cover part, the cover being swingable about said hinging means into and out of the body and having its swinging movement into the box limited by the engagement of the adjacent end of the top with the under face of the stationary part.

3. In a box, a body having a bottom, sides and closed ends, a stationary cover part at one end of the body, a cover having a bottom, sides and an end, and means to hingedly connect the cover at points between its ends to the stationary cover part so as to allow the sides and end of the cover to swing into the body to lie between the sides and closed ends of the latter, the inner end of the cover bottom being disposed beneath the stationary cover part when the parts are in closed position, the bottom of the cover having outwardly projecting side and end parts which engage with the tree edges of the sides and end of the body beyond the stationary cover part.
