Description

Nov. 6, 1923.
E. L. SCHUMACHER Filed July 5. 1921 INVENTOR EL MER 1.. scHuMAcHER BY F/GJZ ATTORNEYS Patented Nov. 6, i923.
ELMER L. SCHUMACHER, OE SOUTI-IIBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERL,
CAN OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SOUTHBBIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A' VOLUNTARY AS- SOCIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
CASE.
Application filed July 5,
invention is the provision of a novel and improved construction of case formed from Z ylonite or other non-metallic material which will be formed with a continuous hinge so that the case shall be substantially dust proof and which shall be provided with improved means for holding the case in closed position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel and improved case in which both the interior and exterior shall be substantially smooth in finish so that no covering or lining for the case is required.
Other objects and advantages of my improved construction of case should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my invention.
Figure I is a perspective viewof the rear of my case in closed position.
Figure II is a front view of the case opened, illustrating the interior thereof.
Figure III is a sectional view as on the line IIIIII of Figure II.
Figure IV is a sectional view taken as on the line IVIV of said figure.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of my improved case formed or shaped from suitable composition material, while the numeral Q'designates the cover section thereof. Uniting these parts is my improved hinge comprising the flat or sheet portion 3 secured to the rear of the body portion of the case, and having an enlarged apertured portion l through which passes the hinge wire 5. The cover section is provided with a similar sheet portion 6 1921. Serial No. 482,633.
and enlarged ,apertured portion as 7 also receiving thehinge wire 5. ,These portions 4 and 7 may if desired be formed byinolding. 4
the material when .hotand subsequently drilling so that there will be'no liabilityof the opening up of the hinge, or under some circumstances may be made by rolling the edge of sheet stock or by doubling thin stock to form the rounded hinge receiving portion and securing the body together so that the plate or sheet portions 3 and 6 will in that I case be laminated or, madeup of two layers of the material. These portions 3 and 6 are secured respectively to the body and to the cover of the case by the employment of a suitable adhesive which will serve to unite the plate portion and top. into a substantially unitary structure.
The hinge wire 5 is formed from a suit- 7 able spring material and has its ends bent in the L portions or termini 8 and 9 which fit respectively beneath the flap or pocket members 10 and 11, -Which like the hinge portions are cemented or similarly suitably secured to the: body and cover portions and serve to receive, hold and conceal the ends of the springs, being rounded out as at 12 for that purpose" so that the springs may be snapped into the pockets thus provided and the structure when complete will present no rough spring ends or edges to catch on either glasses or the clothing, handkerchief, or the like,of the user, but on the other hand will present a neat and attractive appear ance. The spring hinge member endsare so related to each other as to tend to hold the lid in closed position so that opening it to take out the glasses will twist the resilient springport'ion, which when released will spring back into closed position.
I claim:
1. A case comprising a body, an eyeglass receiving compartment, the forward edge of the body having an overlying wall, a cover for the body adapted to engage over the overlying wall when closed, certain diagonally opposite portions of the corresponding adjacent edges of the body and the registering axially, and a single straight 7 spring pintle passing through said axially registering rolls, said pintle having its end portions bent laterally in corresponding directions, each bent end portion engaging one of said pockets, said bent end portions being normally parallel, whereby the body of the spring pintle twists upon opening the cover, thereby resulting in the cover automatically closing in contact with the overlying wall.
2. A case provided with an eyeglass receiving compartment and comprising a body and a cover therefor, the corresponding adjacent edges of the cover and the body respectively at diagonally opposite portions thereof having pocket members adhesively fastened thereto, interconnected hinge members carried by the bod and cover respectively and having tubu ar rolls registering axially, and a single straight spring pintle passing through said axially registering rolls, said pintle having its end portions bent laterally in corresponding directions, each bent portion engaging one of said pockets, said bent end portions being normally parallel whereby the body ol the spring pintle twists upon opening the cover, thereby resulting in the cover automatically closing.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
