Description

C- GRABHORN May 6, 1952 WALLET Filed Nov. 15, 1950 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII..
Patented May 6, 1,952
UNITED STATES PATENT oEFIcE Charles Grabhorn, Hoboken, N. I.
Application November 13, 1950', Serial No. 195,169
This invention relates to wallets of the type generally adapted for holding currency', and the primary object of the invention is to provide a Wallet of relatively simple construction having means for holding bills in separated relationship and with complete safety.
Another object of the invention is toy provide a bill clip for iitment upon a wallet in a position in which the clip will retain bills with complete security and in separated groupsif desired.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a wallet having a bill-retaining clip fitted to the wallet in a simple manner; which will not add material bulk to the wallet and which will retain bills both in front of and behind a cornpartment-forrning ap of the Wallet.
Another object of the invention is to provide a wallet having a clip of such form that the bills which it retains will be securely held by it yet can be Very readily placed in position behind it or extracted from the wallet.
These and numerous other objects are attained by the inventionl a more particular description of which will hereinafter appear and be set forth in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein an illustrative embodiment of the invention is disclosed:
Fig. 1 is a face view of a wallet constructed according to the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view in an enlarged scale taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the clip with which the wallet is provided;
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the clip, and
Fig. 5 is an edge View of the clip on a slightly enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. l shows one type of wallet to which the bill-retaining clip is adapted to be applied, said wallet having a back panel I which may be composed of leather or other suitable sheet material, and said back panel I has its marginal edges inturned, as indicated at 3, 4, 5 and 20 to thereby enclose the edges of a lining piece 2 which overlies the inner face of the back panel 2 and is held in contiguous relation to the back by the stitching 6 which extends about the several edges of the back panel and passes through the marginal edge portions of the lining.
At lis shown an inner flap which has a side edge and a lower edge respectively extended under the inturned portions 4 and 5 of the back panel and secured thereunder by the stitching 2 Claims. (Cl. Lidl-38)` `6. The side edge 8 and the top edge 9 of the flap 1 is free so that bills or currency can be readily inserted between the iap 1 and the back panel I. A pocket or compartment Ill for bills so inserted is thus defined by the panel I and the flap 1, such money compartment being located between the flap and back panel, or actually between the flap and the lining piece 2.
The wallet so constructed is arranged to be doubled or folded upon itself substantially on the line II in the known manner to facilitate it being easily fitted into and carried in the pocket.
A money-retaining clip for the Wallet is indicated generally at I2, the same being preferably composed of spring metal. This clip I2 is provided with a rear plate or leaf I8 which is inserted and is retained between the lining piece 2 and the back panel I of the wallet. The back plate or leaf I8 is integrally connected to a front leaf or spring finger I3 by the loop portion I9 at the bottom of the clip. The loop portion I9 extends forwardly through openings 2I in the lining piece and also through openings l1 in the front flap 1 to a position where it overlies the front or exposed face of the flap 1. The front spring finger I3 of the clip is formed with two legs I4 and I5 which converge from their points of emergence out of the openings I1 to the upper end of the finger I3, these legs of the clip resulting in the formation of an aperture I6 between them into which the thumb of the user of the wallet can be inserted to slightly depress the flap 1 when it is desired to insert currency between the spring finger I3 and the front face of the flap 1.
The above-described arrangement is such that currency or bills can be readily inserted between the finger I3 and the front face of the ap 1, and the resiliency or springiness of the linger I3 will hold the bills in place and exposed, when the wallet is opened or spread out nat as shown in Fig. 1. Bills of larger denomination, for example, can be placed in the compartment Ill located between the flap 1 and the back panel of the wallet. and such bills will be concealed even when the wallet is open. The pressure of the spring finger I3 of the clip is made sufficiently rm to cause this finger to not only retain the bills between it and the front face of the flap l, but to also exert sufficient pressure through flap 'I against the bills contained in the compartment I0 and hold such bills against shifting out of the open top or open end of this compartment.
It will be noted that the clip is situated remotely from the line of fold II of the wallet and thus does notl interfere in any way with the folding of the same or add any bulk to the Wallet at the line of fold.
While I have herein described the clip as being applied to a wallet of a speciiic construction, it will be apparent that the clip may be attached to wallets ofY other form, and that the clip may also be designed in other shapes to meet various requirements. These and other modifications are contemplated as being within the scope of the invention and the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:
1.'A clip, for association with a wallet of the type having a back panel and lining together with an overlying partition flap attached to the panel defining a bill containing compartment, comprising an integral front and rear leaf, a resilient finger forming the upper portion of said front leaf, said rear leaf being attached between said back panel and said lining of the wallet, said front leaf and resilient finger extending through apertures in the lining and flap and positioned over the front face of the flap to enable bills to be placed between it and the outer face of the iiap as well as to retain bills behind it in the bill containing compartment.
2. A clip, for association with a wallet of the 10 the front face of the flap to thereby hold bills between it and the ap and also between the flap and the lining.
