Be it known that I, LOUIS E. BnowN, a citizen'of the United States, residing at Bostonfcountyof Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Il npiovement` in oxes or Cases, of whichI the following is a specification, refer- ,ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

` Myinvention relates to boxes or cases covered with plush, leather or a Similar material which are designed for holding arti# cles such for instance as watches, or jewelry.

As is well known, cases for watches or of aLsiinilarfnat/ure, lcommonly consist of a top and'bottom secured together by means of a hinge. It is important that cases of this typevsh'oluld present a finished appearance which is entirely in keepingrwith their contents. `Cases of this kind. are commonly hingedron the inside and there is a slight relative movement between the outside. edges ofthe topand bottom at the hinged end V,when the cover is moved on the hinge` Therefore, in order that the parts will not bindwhen opened the edges are usually l spacedfapart slightly so that the hinge is then visible. The top and bottom of the box have commonly been covered separately and the covered parts then hinged together, in which case the hinge is visible between the edges ofi the box and its cover when the lox is closed. 'hen it is desired to cover the hinge, a piece of the covering material has been secured to the outer surface of the box and its cover, said piece of covering material extending across the hinge and concealing it. A case covered in this way presents a fairly finished appearance when the case is closed, 'but when open the covering bags out at the hinge and presents an unfinished appearance. This method of concealing the hinge iS inapplicable to plush fcwred boxes on account of the nature of tlie material. lVhen plush has been employs-"ed the hinge has either been left exposed. or the covering material for both top and bottom have been made in a single piece and applied to the box by hand after the box has havin assembled. This is expensive and the covering bags at the. hinge when the box is open.

Applieants object is to produce a hinged case provided with a covering ot any well f known finishing material as plush, silk or Specification of Letters Patent.

Having reference to the drawings there is shown a case of t/he type commonly employed for holding watches orv jewelry. It comprises an upper part or cover A and a lower part or bottom B which vaire preferabi)- constructed of light metal a, but may equally well be made yfrom other suitable material. The Said lugs pass through the hinge covering strip and through suitable slots in the hinge members and are clenched on the inside of the hinge members. y

The construction will perhaps be most readily understood by observing that in Figs. 2 and 3 the outer layer is shown at l.' This is the coverin material. The next layer m is the metal o which the box member is composed. The next layer n is the upturned inner edge of the outer covering material. Interposed between the hinge member p and the layer n is the hinge covering strip o whichis of the same material as that of which the eoveringlis made. The inge spring g.

It-will be seen that the hinge covering stri extends the full width of the hinge ang covers that portion of the hinge which would ordinarily be exposed to sight when the box is closed. When the box 1s opened the very slight fullness of the hinge cover? ing strip extends around the hinge member into thev space between the proximate edges of the two box members and conceals the hinge so that the box presents a perfect appearance to the eye both when opened and A when closed.

What I claim is: l. The improved jewelry case comprising a bottom and a top-covered with finishing material, ar hinge by which said top and bottomalritel secured together, and a strip of finishing material linterposed between the said/hinge and the top and bottom, the said hinge being concealed thereby. i.
