To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WmsLow R. PAnsoNs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Qhicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
his invention relates to improvements in boxes having hinged at one side a cover of a depth adapted to operate as a reoept-acle'and holder for a portion of the contents of the box structure as a whole and which for example is the common practice in boxes used for sewing machine attachments and other arti- 1 cles of weight.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box, embodying theinvention, with the cover closed. Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section of the same through one of the hinges with the box closed. Fig. 3, a similar view with the box open. Among the advantages attributable to my invention as compared with prior hinged covered boxes, are that when the box is open and resting on a table or otherplain surface, there is absolutely no strain upon the pivot due to arts have the weight of the contents of the box, however great that weight maybe; that the g hinges resent no unsightly appearance and particu arly projections either inwardly or outwardly, liable to injury, but on the other ling the box. 11 using a box of the character described for holding sewing machine attachments itis a usual practice, 1n 'pacl :ing the attachments compactly and securely and in such a manner that they will not rattle about in transportation, to provide means for removably securing a part'of the various attachments to the-inside of the body of the box and apart to 'the' inside of the cover thereof, thus weighting the cover considerabl For this reason it is necessary that the hingeconnection of the-cover with thebody of the box should be a strong and substantial one, and it is desirable to provide means for avoiding undue strain on the hinge. A strong hinge connection of the cover with the body of the box is afforded by providing two se arated hinges near the ends of the box, ass own in Fig. 1; and undue strain of the hinges, owing to the weighted cover, is avoided by the construction which permits the cover, when fully open, to rest at one side againsta side of the body of the box, as also to rest, at its inverted top, on the same surface as that on which the box'rests, as will be understood from Fig. 3; the'inverted top of the open cover being on a level, or practically so, with the bottom of the body of the box. The factthat the top of the cover, when the latter isfull 0 en,
is on a level, or practically so, with t 1e ottom of the body of the box, is due toa peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts. To secure this result it is necessary that the depthor height of the cover should be equal, or approximately so, to the distancevbetween the pivotal hinge point, at the pivot pins 14, and the bottom of the body of the box, and which pivotal or hin e point is located below the encircling shoul er or stop 9 at'the base of the inset or contracted portion 8 at the top of the ,body portion of the box, and which contracted portion or inset permitsthe cover, when closed, to be flush with the outer surface of the body of the box.
Having described ,my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: a
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a box comprising a body portion having an inset around its top and an encircling shoulder at the base of said inset, said box also comprising a cover having a hinged connection with said body portion at a pivotal point l which is below said shoulder and which hinged connection is of such construction as to permit said cover, when fully opened, to rest at one side against one side of said body portion, the said cover bein of a height or depth equal, or ap roxiniately so, to the distance between sald pivotal point and the bottom of said body portion of the box whereby said cover, when fully o Jened, is ad ted to rest on thesurface whic 1 sup orts t is box.
2. As an improved article 0 manufacture, a box comprising a body portion, having an inset around its top and an encircling shoulder at the base of said inset, inward projections below said shoulder separated from each other and located near the opposite ends of the box, said projections afi'ording recesses, and outward projections also below said shoulder and located at the ends of and in line with said inward projections, said box also comprising a cover 0 osely fitting said inset and provided at one side with eyes registerin'g with and-fitting within said inward projections, and'pivot or hinge pins inclosed within said inward and outwan projections and said eyes; whereby, when said cover is closed said cover will be flush with the outer surface of the body of the box and when open will rest at one side against one side of the said body of the box,
