PATENT Tries,
JEWELRY Box OR CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 'No. 795,146, dated July 18, 1905. Application filed July 15, 19Q4- Serial No. 216,703-
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD N. LORSCHEI- DER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jewelry Boxes or Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
My present invention relates to improvements in boxes or cases of the character parnovelty that will be hereinafter more fully explained, and pointed out particularly in the claims hereunto annexed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a box constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the cover thereof removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of a box having my improvements applied thereto; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing my improvements applied to a somewhat dif ferently constructed box.
It is essential that boxes of this character wherein jewelry, silverware, and similar articles are to be displayed should present a neat and ornate appearance as well as to possess the requisite durability, and considerable difficulty has been experienced heretofore in securing these features without materially increasing the costof production. For instance,
it is customary to secure the silk or velvet lining of the interior of the box by gluingor otherwise securing the edges of the fabric directly to the sides of the box, leaving the crack or line of junction between the fabric 1 and box entirely unprotected and exposed, presenting an unsightly appearance.
It is the object of my present invention to obviate these objectionable features and to enable a, box of this character to be produced which will present a neat and attractive appearance at all times and which is capable of being. produced at a reduced cost of manufacture. v
My invention in its present embodiment comprises generally the box-bottom 1, which may be formed in the usual manner of strawboard or other suitable material and covered upon its exterior surface by the facing 2 in a suitable manner to present an ornamental or finished appearance. Encircling the interior of the box is a band or strip 4, which preferably extendsto a height somewhat below the top of the box sides, and between this strip 4 and the inner faces of the box sides are in serted the edges of the fabric 5, which is so cut and formed as to form a lining for the interior of the box. This lining may be composed of silk, velvet, or other material suitable for various requirements, the edges of which, after being extended over the top of the strip 4 and inserted between the latter and the box sides. are glued, cemented, or otherwise secured in position with the retainingstrip 4:. The upper edges of the covering or facing 2, which covers the exterior surface of the box, may be left temporarily unattached until a protective or concealing strip 6, which encircles the interior of the box at a point immediately above the upper edge of the retaining-strip 4, has been glued or otherwise secured in position, when the unattached edges of the facing 2 may be lapped over this protective strip 6 and inserted between the re- Y taining-strip 4 and the sides of the box, where it will be completely concealed and hidden. Thus it will be understood that the fabric or lining 5 will be effectually secured in position by its edges, which are extended between the closely-abutting edges of the protective strip 6 and and the retaining-strip 1, being glued or cemented behind the latter, which is secured to the sides of the box.
The shape and interior arrangement of the box is of course immaterial and may be varied to meet the-requirements of different conditions, and in certain cases the articles to be contained within the box may require the employment of a stage or support 7 the present construction enabling this support to be easily placed in proper position within the box and beneath the fabric or lining 5 without weakening the attachment of the latter to the box or exposing the joining portions thereof.
A box of this character embodying my invention maybe inexpensively manufactured, and at the same time the fabric or lining thereof will be firmly united to the box in such a manner as to obtain the greatest strength and to produce the neatest appearance.
I claim as my invention 1. In a box, of the character described, the
combination with the body of the box and the fabric having its edges attached to the inner sides of the box and forming a lining for the interior thereof, of a protective strip secured to the sides of the box and extending inwardly therefrom above the attached edges of the lining for concealing the edges of the said lining where they are attached to the box.
2. ,In a box of the character described, the combination with the body of the box having the retaining-strip arranged therein, and the fabric forminga lining for the interior of the box having its edges secured between the retaining-strip and the sides of the box, of a protective strip secured to the box and arranged opposite the retaining-strip for concealing the attached edges of the lining.
3. An article of the class described embodying the body portion of a box having a retaining-strip, a flexible lining having its edges secured between the retaining strip and the sides of the box, and a protective strip secured to the sides of the box adjacent to the retaining-strip and opposite to the space between the latter and the sides of the box for concealing the attached edges of the lining.
4. An article of the class described embodying the body portion 'of the box having the covering for its exterior surfaces the top edges of which are unattached, a protective strip encircling the inner edges of the sides of the box over which the unattached edges of the said covering are lapped, a flexible lining for the interior of the box, and a retaining-strip formed to [it within the sides of the box beneath the protective strip, for binding the edges of the box covering and lining between it and the sides of the box.
5. A box of the character described comprising the body portion thereof, a retainingstrip extending around the interior of the box adjacent. to the sides thereof, a lining within the box having its edges secured between the retaining-strip and the sides ofthe box, and a protective strip extending inwardly within the sides of the box and abutting against the retaining-stri p for covering the joint formed by the meeting of the secured edges of the lining and the inner surfaces of the box sides.
