To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICKV. ETTLIN- GER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to paper boxes, and its object is to provide a paper box especially adapted for jewelers use and so constructed as to be easy to manufacture, economical, and attractive in appearance.

The invention consists of a paper box comprising abodyportion provided with a domeshaped lid or cover composed of several layers of stout paper or pasteboard glued and pressed together and of a depending surrounding side piece suitably secured to said cover, substantially in the manner set forth.

The box A is preferably constructed of pasteboard, though stout paper or other vsuitable material may be employed. It is made in substantially square shape with l rounded corners. The lid or cover a is hin ged to the body portion b in any well.- known The body portion b and lid a are provided with satin lining, as usual in boxes for jewelers use. The body portion Z) is composed of the usual fiat bottom piece b and the usual lower side piece b', secured thereto and extending upwardly a suitable distance. Upon the inside of this lower side piece b2 is a reinforcing or collar strip b3, which extends to some distance'above the edge of the lower side piece and which is overlapped by the sides of the cover when the box is closed. Upon the inside of the collar-strip b3 is a strip b4, by which the lining is retained in position, as shown at the rightliand side of Fig. 2.

, The cover a is suitably hinged to the lower or body portion bof the box and has a domeshaped top a', formed of several superimposed layers of suitable material, preferably stout paper or pasteboard, secured together by glue and pressed into convexo-concave or dome shape. Threelayers of pasteboard are shown. The top layer is of slightly-greater area than the other two and projects beyond them, forming a circumferential flange a2. Beneath said flange a2 and pressing against the edges of the two layers of the said top a is the depending side piece a3, which is glued in place. The side piece a3 rests upon the side piece b2 when the box is closed and surrounds the collar-strip b4. Upon the inside of the upper side piece CL3 is a strip a4, by which the lining of the cover is retained in position. The various parts of the box before described are properly assembled and iirmly glued together. The entire exterior of the box is covered with a suitable covering material, preferably embossed paper having a grain in imitation of leather. Over the dome of the lid is smoothly pasted a covering c, which extends a short distance down upon the surface of the upper side piece 0,3. The covering c. of the side piece a3 is pasted over the depending portion of the top covering c, the upper edge of said covering c lying close to the upper edge of the lid, as shown in Fig. 2. The covering c is then smoothed down upon the surface of the `said upper side piece a3 and turned around its lower edge and upwardly on the inside. The exterior of the body portion of the box is covered with the same material as the lid and applied in any suitable manner.

By the construction above described is produced a box especially suitable for jewelers use, which can be manufactured at very low cost, has a very attractive appearance, and which is intended to fake the place of expensive boxes in general use made of wooden main portion and plush or leather coverings.
