G. M. OARNAHAN. FILE BOX AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME.
Patented May 5, 1891.
fnrs'rz/ZF -UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
CHARLES M. CARNAHAN, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
FILE-BOX AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING THE SAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,726, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed February 16, 1891. Serial No. 331,590- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that 1, CHARLES M. OARNAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Campbell, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in File-Boxes and Manufacture of Same, of which the following is a specification, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings.
The object. of my invention is to construct a box for filing papers, bills, &c., in such a manner as that the vertical sides and end of same may be re-enforced and at the same time quickly constructed. This box consists of two portions which telescope in the usual manner, the inner or sliding box portion only being shown, as the outside box or cover is constructed exactly the same as the one herein shown, excepting that the open end comes out square instead of beingbeveled off, as shown herein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of what I shall denominate the top of the box, with its side portions bent into position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of what I shall denominate the bottom of the box, the integral side portions being creased and bent into position to receive the side portions of the top shown in Fig. l. 3 is a perspective View of the box with the top and bottom portions in position, also showing the end flaps bent to proper position before gluing or pasting the end portion thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box complete. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the box on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
My invention consists of a box formed from two pieces of suitable card-board or other material, said two portions forming the top, bottom, and sides of the box, the said sides being doubled, as shown. The top portion A has two integral side pieces a a and a short end fiap a. The bottom portion B has the integral side pieces I) b and end flaps b, said side pieces also having end flaps 19 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. To the end flap a of the top portion is pasted or otherwise suitably secured the end portion O, which latter is reenforced or stiifened by the metallic bindingpieces 0.
b and fla s a, D 17 and b are then creased and bent to shape, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The operator next secures the end piece O to the flap a, as shown in Fig. 3, the metallic binding 0 having preferably been first secured to the sides of said end piece. It desired, said end piece may be first secured to said flap and the metallic bindings afterward applied to said end piece and flap. Having properly formed the top and bottom portions, as just described, the operator places the top portion within the bottom portion, the side pieces a of the former resting on the bottom B and against the inner face of the sides Z) of said bottom portion, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the contact-faces of said side portions a and I) having first had a suitable coat of paste or glue applied thereto to hold them firmly togetherand add double stiifness to the sides of the box. The flaps b b of the sides b are next bent inward, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lower flap b bent upward, as shown in said Fig. 3, after which the re-enforced end piece O is bent down over said flaps and securely pasted or glued thereto, which completes the construction of the box. The flaps Z) I)? b may be of any desired width. If desired, said flaps may be made to cover the end of the box and the end piece afterward secured thereto.
The advantages of my invention are apparent. The doubled sides add strength to the box, and the metallic bindings for the end piece tend to strengthen the latter.
The aforedescribed box is simple and cheap of manufacture, and possesses all the advantages of a metal-lined box without the additional weight attendant upon such a box.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A file-box composed of two separate portions, one of said portions consisting of top A, sides a a, and top end flap a, all in one integral piece, the other portion consisting of bottom B, sides I) 1), bottom end flap 1), and side end flaps b all in one integral piece, the top end flap a having the end portion C connected thereto, the sides a a resting Within and against the sides I) Z) and glued thereto, said end piece being connected to the flaps b and b b after the latter are folded to place, substantially as herein set forth.
2 The method of manufacturing file-boxes herein set forth, the same consisting of first creasing and bending two pieces of suitable card-board material so as to form the integral are folded inward and the end piece glued 2o thereto, as herein set forth.
CHAS. M. CARNAHAN.
