UNIT D STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK BROCIUVAY READ, OF NEYV YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,354, dated J uly4, 1899.
Application filed March 22, 1899.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK BROCKWAY READ, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cover, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is 'to provide a new and improved cover more especially designed fortemporary .use on caskets, pieces of furniture, or other articles for protecting the same while being transported from one place to another or while being stored, the cover being simple and durable in construc tion, cheap to manufacture, and strongly reinforced, especially at the ends and corners.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same,as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
' Figure 1 is a plan View of the blank for making the cover. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same folded. Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsection of the same on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line 4 4 in Fig. 2. Fig. 5' is a perspective view Fig. 6 is a similar view of the same with parts in a different position. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one end of the finished cover, and I Fig. 8 is a plan view of the same.
The improved cover is made from a blank A, of canvas, paper, or other suitablematerial, cut into rectangular form and having a longitudinal middle crease B and a transverse middle crease O to permit of conveniently folding the said blank A first along the crease B and then along the crease'C to the shape shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4:. When the blank is folded into this position, diagonal registering cuts D D .D D are made in the overlapped portions of the blank, said cuts terminating at their inner ends near transverse creases E E and longitudinal creases E E as is plainly-shown in Fig. 1. The blank thus prepared forms a rectangular bottom F, con- Serial No. 710,071. (No model.)
tinuous sides G G, end flaps H H H H and reinforcing-flaps I I.
In order to form the cover, the sides G G are bent up into a vertical position along the or otherwise fastened together, and then the reinforce-flaps I I are bent upward upon the overlapped ends and doubled up along a crease J, (see Figs. 5 and 6,) part of the outer doubled-up portion extending downwardly to be folded back under the bottom F and glued, pasted, or otherwise secured thereto, as indicated in Figs. 7 and 8. The ends of the doubled-up flap I are folded upon the sidesG G, the extreme corners being finally folded upon the under side of the bottom F over part of that portion of the flap I previ ously secured to the bottom. The several portions of the flap I thus folded upon the ends, sides, and bottom are secured thereto by paste, glue, or other binding substance to complete the cover. Now it will be seen that by the arrangement described the cover formed is strongly reinforced at theends and corners, and consequently is not liable to be torn at the points most exposed to wear and tear.
It will be seen that the cover is very simple and durable in construction and can be read ily formed and given the desired shape to protect a casket, a piece of furniture, or other article on which it is to be used.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cover made of a single piece of fabric, creased to form a bottom, continuous sides, overlapping flaps for forming the ends, and a doubled-up reinforce-flap for each end and extending'from the bottom, to engage the lower portion of said overlapping end flaps and part of the" bottom and sides,; substantially as shownand described. a
2. A cover having a bottom, sides and ends,
and formed from a single piece of fabric provided with diagonal cuts or slits extending inwardly from the ends toward the longitudinal center of the fabric forming overlapping end flaps and a reinforcing-flap, said flap being bent up against the end flaps, then doubled upon itself and carried under the bottom and around the sides and secured thereto, substantially as described.
3. A cover having a bottom, sides and ends,
and formed of a single piece of fabric having longitudinal and transverse creases, and pro-
