Description

oooo I) GUILBERTI' PAPER BO No. 583,469. v Patented June 1,1897.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MURRAY GUILBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAPER BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,469, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed September 5, 1895. Serial No. 561,483. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN MURRAY GUIL- BERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the followin g specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in the class of paper boxes having heads on the bottom thereof, the same being adapted for supporting and retaining articles, such as neckwear, in proper position in the box, desirable for packing, display, &c.
The invention consists of the novel construction of the attaching and supporting devices of the heads and also a novel manner of securing the heads in position.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a paper box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line a: as, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 representsa perspective view of one of the heads in condition preparatory to attachment to the box. Figs. at and 5 represent perspective views of different forms of heads embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of a paper box of well-known form and construction.
B designates heads on the bottom of the box, the same being separated and adapted for supporting articles of neckwearin the box and holding them apart. The heads are hollow, of rectangular, rhomboidal, trapezoidal, or other suitable shape, and have on their inner ends the tongues O, which engage with the single cross-strip D, the latter being fastened to the bottom E of the box by eyelets D or other metallic clenching devices within the sides of said strip, leaving said sides free from the bottom of the box, so as to be embraced by the opposite tongues of each head, the tongues being interposed between said strip and the bottom, whereby said heads are firmly retained in upright position, since the strip is secured to the bottom and the tongues O are interposed between said strip and bottom and rest flat on the latter, whereby their shifting or displacement is prevented and said heads are doubly supported on the bottom and strip. The weight of the heads presses down the strip D and the latter presses the tongues against the bottom.
When desired, the strip D may be gummed or pasted to the bottom of the box and thus sustain the heads.
In Figs. 2, 3, and 4 the tongues pass around and under the side edges of the strip G,while in Fig. 5 the tongues pass through slits E in the strip D and then project under the latter.
The outer ends F of the heads are closed in any suitable manner, but may be left open, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A paper box consisting of a body A, having the transverse strip D attached to the bottom E thereof, by fasteners within the side edges of said strip and the head F provided with tongues located between said strip and said bottom, said strip having its side edges disconnected from said bottom for the location of said tongues thereunder, said parts being combined.
JOHN MURRAY GUILBERT.
