Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo JOHN M. VADDILL, OF REIDSVI'LLE, NORTH CAROLINA.
Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,518, dated December 2'7, 1887. v
Application filed October 27, 1887. Serial No. 253,537. (No model.)
T a/ZZ whom/ it may concern.-
`Be it known that I, JOHN M. IVADDILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beidsville, in the county of Rockingham'and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boxes; and it consists in the peculiar construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, Figure l is a plan View of the blank from which the box is made. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the completed box. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the clip which is used to secure the parts of the box together.
Referring by letter to the drawings, Fig. l shows the blank from which the box of Fig. 2 is formed, and it comprises the folds a b c d and the flaps g h k l on the edges of the said folds, the dotted lines indicating the divisional and folding lines, which may be scored to insure accurate bending. The flaps g lc have the V-shaped notches cut :in their outer edges, which form the tongues g2 g and k2 7c3 on opposite sides of the said notches, respectively. The tongues g2 and 7cz are rounded at the ends and thetongues g3 7c3 are angular. It will be seen thatthe tongues g2 g3. and kzit form forks at the outer ends of the flaps g and 1c. The iapsZ l on the side edges of the fold d are very narrow, and a similar narrow flap, m, is formed on the outer or front edge of the fold d. 'This iiap on is provided at the ends with the ears n n.
The fold b comprises the bottom of the box, the folds c and c comprise, respectively, the front and rear sides, and the fold d comprises the lid or cover of the box. To form the box, therefore, from the blank, as described, the folds c and c are bent up at right angles to the bottom fold, b, and the flaps hh are folded up to iill the spaces between the ends of the folds a c, and thus form the ends of the box. The
aps g and 7c are now folded toward each other on the outside of the iiaps h h, and the forks .5o on the ends of the said flaps are caused to interlace, so that the tongues g2 and kf'will be y.on the outside (or exposed to view) and the tongues gB and k3 will be on the inside, (or con cealed,.)
The ends of the rounded tongues gils are fastened down to the sides of the box by the clips O O, the points S S of which are passed through the said tongues and the end flaps and bent or turned over on the inside. The ends of the tonguesg2 k2 are rounded to improve the appearance of the outside of the box, and also to avoid exposing angles or unfastened edges, which would be liable to be turned up in using the box. The tongues gif and 7d* are concealed, as before stated, and therefore there is no necessity to round their ends.
By constructing the body of the box in the manner described there are three thicknesses of material at each end thereof, which will prevent the ends from collapsing, and will also strengthen the front and rear sides, thereby rendering the entire box very rigid and substantial.
Having now formed the body of the box, the lid-fold will close down over the top thereof. The side aps, ZZ, are bent downwardly at right angles to the fold d, the ila-p m on the front edge of the lid is similarly bent, and the ears n n on the ends of the ap m are folded within the ends of the flaps Z Z, and pasted, riveted, clipped, or otherwise secured to the said iiaps. rlhe lid, as will be seen, isnow provided with depending lips Zlm, (on the three free edges) which are adapted to pass down around the upper edges of the box, and the fourth edge ofthe lid is hinged or attached to the upper edge of the rear fold, c. Thus I have provided a box adapted to contain candies, oysters, &c., or to be us'ed as a millinery or shelf box, which is formed from a single out, punched, or otherwise-shaped blank, and is provided with an integral lid which fits down over the top of the box and has depending lips to embrace and support the sides of 9 5 the box. The said box is further provided with strengthening-flaps at theends to fold over the said ends and interlace, thus protecting and bracing the entire structure and relieving the ordinary fastening devices of a great part of the strain which they must ordinarily bear. L
A further and very great advantage of this box is, that there are no loose or unprotected IOO corners or edges. All corners and edges are carefully concealed or protected except the ends of the outside tongues, g2 and k2, and these are fastened firmly in place. It will be seen that the entire box is held together by the clips which hold the said tongues down.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The box comprising the fold b, flaps h L on the side edges thereof, the folds a and o, and the flaps f/ and k, having the tongues g2 y and kik on their outer ends, which are adapted to interlaee on the outside of the aps h 71 substantially as and for the purpose speeied. 2. The box comprising the bottom fold, b,
the side folds, a c, the top or lid fold, d, the 15 end aps, 7L h, on the fold b, the forked flaps g and lc on the folds a and c, respectively, adapted to interlace on the outside of the flaps h h, and the clips O, to fasten the free ends of the forked flaps to the end Ilaps, h, of the box, ze substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOI-IN M. XVADDILL.
