H. O. YEISER KNOGKDOWN FILE BOX.
No. 456,075. Patented July 14, 1891.
UNI D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. YEISER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COM- PANY, OF SAME PLACE.
KNOCKDOWN FILE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 456,075, dated July 14, 1891.
Application filed April 9, 1891. Serial No. 388,226. (No model.)
To aZl whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. YEISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati,Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Knockdown File-Box, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has for its object the construction of pasteboard boxes (or boxes of other suitable material) for filing legal documents, the invention relating more particularly to the construction of the rear or closed end thereof, as will more fully hereinafter place, showing said box in a knocked-down position ready for shipment. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box shown in Fig. 1, the
sides thereof being righted to position, and showing the position of the rear end flaps when about closing and completing said end portion. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rear end of the box shown in Fig. 2 after having been completed according to my invention.
The box, as preferably constructed, consists of the top and bottom portions A B, sides 0, side end flaps a,'and bottom end flaps D, all formed from one piece of suitable material and creased and bent to position in the usual manner; but, if desired, said box may be constructed from two or more separate pieces properly glued together.
My invention consists in. the construction of the rear end flap D and the means shown for connecting it to the rear end portion of top A. On the outer free edge of flap D is formed an integral flange d, creased and bent as shown, which flange overlaps the top edge of the side end flaps a and engages beneath the rear under surface of top A, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. To the top edgeof flap D is glued the flexible strip 01', a portion of the outer edge of said gummed strip overlapping the outer edge of flap D, as shown in Fig. 2, which overlapping edge is glued to the outer edge of top A, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 that the flange (Z of flap D rests beneath the top of the box and overlaps the end flaps a andthat the gummed strip d serves to retain said end flap and its flange in position. the latter greatly assisting to strengthen the end portion. The front end of the box shown is provided with the usual side end flaps a and bottom end flap D, the elongated portion of said flap engaging within aslit a in the usual manner; but this front end portion constitutes no feature of my invention.
My invention may be advantageously applied in the construction of the closed ends of telescoping file-boxes,such as are now commonly in use for office purposes.
The great disadvantage attendant upon the usual method of manufacturing file-boxes is that as now commonly constructed said boxes must necessarily be made complete in the factory and shipped in a completed form, by reason of which a very considerable space is required to ship afew hundred boxes. \Vhen constructed according to my improvement, this very considerable disadvantage is overcome, as the boxes may be finished complete in the factory, except securing the gummed strip (1 to place on the cover A, which can readily be done by an inexperienced workman after the boxes have arrivedat their destination.
strip (1 unconnected with the top of the box the latter may be readily knocked down, as shown in Fig. 1, and a large number of boxes may in this manner be shipped in a comparatively small space.
The advantages of my improvements are apparent, facilitating, as they do, in economizing space and also in affording additional strength to the closed end when most needed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.
A knockdown file-box consisting of top A,
bottom B,sides O, the latter having end flaps By leaving the outer free edge of gummed
