No. 345,298. Patented July 13, 1886 I I I 12. I I .2? 1 I I I I a I at a, I O I I I I Q have WILLIAM GOODBODY,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING BOX.
QPECIFICA'I'ION forming part of Letters Patent No. 345,298,dated July 13, 1886.
Application filed November 14, 1885. Serial No. 182,816. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GoonBonY, of the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to folded boxes for samples and smallparcels of merchandise, and has for its object to cheapen the construction thereof and improve their appearance. It dispefises with the use of a handle made, as is ordinarily the case, of a piece of ribbon or tape, or of an independent strip of material attached to the box, and substitutes for such separate piece a handle made integral with the box, without involving any waste of material or extra labor in its production.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the blank piece cut into shape and creased to form the box and its handle, and Fig. 2 is a view in perspective illustrating the improved handle constituting my invention.
A B G D E represent the several folds of the blank, of pasteboard. light sheet metal, or other suitable 1naterial,which form the body of the box. E E, E E, F F, and G G are the folds which are to close its ends, and H H the tongue-pieces upon the outer fold, E, by which the ends, when folded, are to be confined. The end pieces, F F G G, are perforated, as at M and N, with transverse slits, to receive the tongues H H when the box is foldedinto shape, (see Fig. 2,) the outer fold, E, which carries the tongues, being pasted down upon the first fold, A, when the box is completed, as shown in Fig. 2. This construction ofthe box is not new, and my present invention relates only to the combination of a handle therewith.
My improved handle is formed integrally with the box by cutting out from the material thereof, preferably with a curved slit, m, as shown in Fig. 1, or otherwise by straight slits forming three sides of a parallelogram, a piece, R, to be turned up upon a crease, n, Fig. 1, extending between the ends :0 w of the slit or slits, and by cutting out the central portion of said piece, as at S in the drawings. The form of the handle R thus cut out and bent up out of the material of the box may be varied, the essential feature thereof being its 5 5 pasting thereon an extra strip of textile or other pliable material. (See dotted lines \V in Fig. 1.)
I am aware that afolded box has been heretofore constructed in which a tongue is left projecting from one margin of the blank, so as to project afterward from the finished box to serve as a handle, as shown in Patent No. 306,509, of October 14, 1884. My invention differs therefrom in that the piece for the handle is cutout from the body of the blank within its outer edges, so that there is no waste of material in providing said handle, which is bent outwardly to serve as a handle.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with a bpx constructed of a folded body, of a piece partially divided from said body within its outer edges and bent outward therefrom to form a handle which is united integrally thereto, substantially in the manner and for thepurposeherein set forth.
2. The combination, with a piece partially divided from the. body of a folded box and bent outward therefrom to constitute a hair dle unitedintcgrally thereto, of astrip of flexible material secured to the body to overlap and re-enforce the crease orjoint between the two, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
, In testimony whereofI havesigned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\VM. GOODBODY.
