POWERS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE PATENT LPAPER CIGAR BOX COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CIGAR-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,200, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed September 7, 1886. Serial No. 212,924. (N model.) 7
' citizen of the United States, residing at New of the box.
York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
. The object of this invention is to provide a cigar-box which can be produced economically as regards both material and workmanship, which shall have sufficient strength to withstand the usual pressure incident to the packing of the cigars, and which will present an attractive-appearance.
Figure I of the accompanying drawings is a perspective view of the blank designed to constitute the bottom and ends of this improved cigar-box, in connection with a blank, partly broken away, designed to constitute one side thereof. Fig. II is a longitudinal section of this improved cigar-box on line i v; of Fig. III.- Fig. III is a transverse section of this improved cigar-box on line of Fig. II. Fig. IV is a perspective view of this improved cigar-box in a finished state.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
This improved cigar-box is preferably composed in part of pasteboard and in part of wood, and comprises a rectangular blank, 1, designed to constitute the bottom and ends of thebox, the former of a single and the latter of a double thickness, two similar rectangular blanks, 2 and 3,designed toiconstitutethe front and rear sides of the box, respectively, and a rectangular blank, 4, 7 designed to constitute the top orcover thereof. a Y L The blank 1 is composed of pasteboard and provided with two parallel transverse outer scores, 5, at a distance from its ends equal to the interior height of the latter, and with two transverse inner scores, 6, at a distance from the ends of the blankjequal to twice the height blank into a bottom section, 7, two end sections, 8, constituting outer layers of ends of These scores 5 and 6 divide the- 'the box, and two end sections, 9, constituting the inner layers of the ends of the box.
The blanks 2 and 3 are of a width equal to the height of the box less the thickness of the cover and bottom thereof, and are of a length equal to the interior length of the box. The blank 2, constituting the front side of the box, is preferably composed of wood, and the blank 3, constituting the rear side of the box,is also preferably composed of wood; but pasteboard or other suitable material may be used therefor. The cover-blank f is of a width equal to the exterior width of the box, and of a length equal to the exterior length of the box less the thickness of the ends thereof.
In setting up thisimproved cigar-box, the blank 1 is first folded on the lines of the outer scores, 5, forming a double thickness of the material between the scores 5 and 6 at opposite ends of the blank. The sections 9 are site sides of the blank 1, between the double ends thereof, and nails are passed through said double ends into the ends of said side blanks, if the latter be composed of wood, securing them firmly in position. Nails may also be passed through the bottom. sections into the side sections. If the side blanks be composed of pasteboard, they are secured by strips of muslin 10, pasted or glued upon the edges of the bottom, sides, and ends. The end sections, 8 and 9,which are folded in contact with each other, are pasted or cemented together. The cover is preferably hinged to one side of the box by means of a cloth hinge, in the ordinary manner, and shuts between the ends of the box flush with the upper edges thereof. Anail or other fastening device may be used to secure the cover at the front side of the box. The joints and corners of the box are preferably covered on its exterior by strips 11, of ornamental paper, in the usual manner, and the interior of the box may be lined and labeled according to fancy.
In order to utilize waste stock, one or both of the end sections, 9, may not be cut integral with the blank 1; but, instead thereof, a separate rectangular piece may be inserted, cut from scrap material, as shown in Fig. II.
The pasteboard blanks are preferably cut from straw-board, and preferably that which is covered on one side with paper stamped in imitation of cedar wood.
A box thus constructed is strong, stiff, durable, and symmetrical, and can be produced cheaply in a great variety of sizes without the use of expensive machinery for each different slze.
I claim as my'invention The combination, in a cigar-box, of a rectangular main blank comprising a rectangular bottom section, and two end sections at each end folded upon each other and constituting double layers at each end, said endsections being folded at right angles to the bottom section, and two blanks constituting the sides of the box, the folded layers of the double ends being cemented together, substantially as described.
