RING BOX.
My invention relates to a jewelry box intended primarily for the effective display and convenient preservation'of finger rings, especially rings having large sets, which in boxes of ordinary design are not exhibited to advantage. When displayed in a show case or on top of one, or on a dressing table or the like, the set of a ring can best be seen when viewed at an angle, although in ordinary ring boxes theslot for rereption of the body of the ring extends vertically down towards the bottom of the box, to permit a large set to lie fiat on the padded surfaces on the opposite sides of the ring pocket. The object of my invention is to provide for the display oi rings having large sets, as onyx rings, rings set with clusters of gems, and also signet rings and the like, at an angle to the horizontal, and to this end I have devised the novel ring box here inafter described in detail and which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. In
carrying out my invention I have had in View ease and economy of manufacture, and r certain details in construction of my invention relate to the attainment of these ends. The essential elements of my invention are more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of my novel ring box; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, at right angles to the hinge axis; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the supporting member of the ring support, in flat form; Fig. 4 is a plan view of one of the pieces of the cloth covering of the ring support; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the other such piece.
Like reference characters indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawing.
' struction, that illustrated being a box of conventional form and construction having a sheet metal body provided with an ornamental covering and lining and having a cover of similar construction connected to the body member by a spring hinge arranged to alternatively hold the cover either closed or open. Fitting within the box body is the ring support to which the present invention relates. This support may be suitably constructed of stilt pasteboard member,
, marked 1, (or other suitable material, as sheet metal) bent along parallel lines (indicated by dotted lines on the drawing) and covered with a textile lining material which The box body may be of anysuitable eongives an ornamental finish to the support and provides apocket for reception of the body of the ring. As shown, and preferably, the ring support is bent along the lines a and b, and bent to form a narrow, horizontal forward section 2, an inclined intermediate section 3, and a rear inclined section 3. The bend a, and the forward portion 2, however. may be omitted if desired. The forward piece of the support covering, marked 4, covers the top or" the sections 2 and 3, and extends downwardly and rearwardly upon the rear section 3 to. cover at least the upper portion thereof. This piece of the coveringmaterial is preferably carriedflunderneath the supporting member 1 to provide a neat finish, and is cemented. or otherwise secured to such member in asuitable man ner. The rearward pieceot covering material, marked 5, extends loosely over the upper face of the rear inclined section 3 of the support and is attached to such support adjacent its edges to form a pocket 6 to receive the body of the ring. This rearward piece of material preferably is cut to form a flap '5 which is inturned at the edge ofthe pocket to provide a neat finish at that point. As shown, the pieces of material forming the covering for the support are in the present instance formed with pasting fiaps,-all marked 7 on the drawing-which are carried beneath the edge of the supporting member (the folding lines being indicated by dotted lines) and there secured by glue, or other cement. The support being con- .structed to fit within the box snugly, the
inherent resiliency of the sheet material of which the member 1 is constructed will serve to securely retain it in the box body, without the necessity of employing positive attaching means.
While I regardthe particular construction of the supporting member of sheet material bent to the form illustrated as most desirable, and as constituting a part of my invention, it will be understood that the claims are not intended to be limited to this construction except as expressly required by their terms.
It is obvious that the inclined position of the ring pocket serves to hold the set of a ring placed therein in the most advantageous position for display, and that the inclined front wall of. the support provides ample space for display of a very large set.
The particular construction described is moreover exceedingly simple and easy to construct, rendering it possible to commercially produce the article very rapidly and economically.
I claim:
1. In a ring box, a support formed of sheet material fitting Within the box body, the front edge of said support abutting the bottom of the front wall of the body of the box and the rear Wall abutting the bottom of the rear Wall thereof and said support including inclined sections meeting at their top along a transverse line of bend of the material, the section to the rear of said line being covered with textile lining material arranged to provide a ring pocket open at its top adjacent said line of bend.
2. In a ring box, a support formed of sheet material fitting Within the box body, the front edge of said support abutting the bottom of the front Wall of the body of the box and the rear Wall abutting the bottom of the rear wall thereof and said support including a horizontal front section and a connected upwardly inclined intermediate section and a connected rear section inclined downwardly from said intermediate section, said rear section being provided with a rin pocket open at its top adjacent said line 0 bend.
3. In a ring box, a support formed of sheet material fitting within the box body, the front edge of said support abutting the bottom of the front wall of the body of the box and the rear wall abutting the bottom of the rear Wall thereof and said support including a horizontal front section and a connected upwardly inclined intermediate section and a connected rear section inclined downwardly from said intermediate section, said front and intermediate sections and at least the upper portion of said rear section being covered With one piece of textile lining material, and said rear section being covered with another piece of such material overlying the rear portion of said first-mentioned piece and arranged to form a ring pocket.
In testimony whereof, I have subscribed my name.
JOHN M. SHIELDS.
