UNITED PAE QFFIG MAX KAYSER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,598, dated August-1, 1876; application filed May 24, 1876.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. The object of my invention is to provide a shirt in which a neck-tie or scarf forms a permanent fixture, so that the two are combined I together to constitute a single article of dress,
with or without a collar. In this example 1 have shown a collar also permanently attached to the shirt.
In carrying out my invention I make the shirt proper, A, in the usual manner, with or without a permanent collar, B, and in the next place make a neck-tie, C, provided on its upper back edge with a flap, 1), which can be folded under the neck-tie, and can lie fiat against the shirt-bosom. The object of the flap is to enable me to secure the neck-tie permanently to the shirt in such a manner that the neck-tie will take on a natural and easy appearance on the shirt-bosom, and so as to form a single article of apparel from the permanent combination of .the shirt and neck-tie. The flap D is riveted to the outer fold E of the shirt-bosom by a rivet, F, which secures them to each other, the shank of the rivet being provided with a shoulder or flange, G, which comes against the under surface of the fold E of the shirt-bosom, or against the part of the neck-band belonging to it, the rivet being passed through the fold E and through the flap of the neck-tie, and its end then riveted, so as to fasten said fold and flap to each other. Upon the inner end of the rivet F I form a button, H, and make a button-hole, I, in the under fold J of the shirt-bosom, or of the part of the neck-band connected therewith, oppo- I site to the rivet, so that the button can be passed into the button-hole, and thereby close the shirt-bosom and keep its inner and outer folds in place.
My improvement enables the wearer to save the time which is spent in putting on and fitting and adjusting the neck-tie when it is separate from the shirt, and enables one to procure both articles combined in one, so as to form a single article of wearing apparel.
The appendage I have here called a necktie may be arranged like a scarf, and, whatever its form may be, it can be made of such material as can be washed with the shirt.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent, is-
The rivet F, provided with a flange, G, and combined with the neck-tie or scarf G and bosom-fold E, as described, and also provided at its inner end with a button, H, arranged to pass through the button-hole in the inner fold J of the shirt-bosom, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of May, 1876.
