UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH W. BATES, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO EATON CLIFF, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HANDLES FOR WASH-BOILERS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,055, dated August 24, 1875; application filed July 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. BATES, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and in the State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler- Handles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a double handle formed of a single piece of metal with two parallel bars and an angular loop at each end for use on Wash-boilers and other vessels, as hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of awash-boiler, with one of my handles secured thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the handle.
A represents a wash-boiler of any construction, to the ends of which my improved handles are firmly riveted. The handle B at one end of the boiler is preferably formed with two parallel bars, O 0, connected at their lower ends, as shown in Fig. 1, and all made in one piece of wrought-iron, malleable cast-iron, or other suitable material; but to this handle of itself I make no claim. At the other end of same material as the other handle.
the straight bars of the handles are made a suitable number of holes for the passage of the rivets that fasten them to the boiler.
By these handles the boiler is very materially strengthened, and when pouring out it is under perfect control of the person handling it.
The bars 0 O, of the handle B, form braces for the boiler to rest on upon the edge of a tub or bucket while pouring out, thereby pre venting the indentation of the boiler, which is so frequently seen when a boiler has been in use for a short time.
In pouring out from the boiler, the person handling it takes hold of the double handle D, giving him or her perfect control of the boiler, and preventing it from tipping to either side.
These handles maybe used on other vessels, where suitable, as well as on wash-boilers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The double handle D D, with parallel counecting-bars E E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of July, 1875.
JOSEPH W. BATES.
