COVER-KNOB.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMns F. Fos'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cover-Knobs, of which the following is a, specification.
This invention relates to the cover-knobs of tea kettles and other vessels or receptacles.
Ordinarily, such knobs are constructed of wood and fastenedto the cover by a bolt or rivet. Such knobs are liable to be split or broken, and even when they remain intact they become loose in time, owing to the charring or softening of the wood at the lower end of the knob.
The object of my invention is the provision of an inexpensive knob of this kind which shall be strong and durable and not liable to get loose.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tea-kettle cover provided with the improved knob. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the central portion of the cover.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The cover A may be of any ordinary cOnstrujpion but preferably has the usual flat top The knob consists of a pair of crossed upright loops B, B having their lower ends rigidly secured to the top of the cover. Each loop is preferably bent from a single piece of wire and its upper portion is enlarged or comparatively wide, while its sides converge toward the cover, as shown, whereby the intersecting loops form a skeleton metallic knob which can be conveniently grasped and which is ventilated on all sides and therefore not liable to become uncomfortably hot.
At their point of intersection, the horizontal top bars of the loops are preferably Specification of Letters Patent.

In the preferred construction shown in the drawings, the side bars of the loops are provided at their lower ends with outwardlybent horizontal portions forming feet 0 which rest upon the flat top of the cover. These feet terminate in extensions 0 which pass through holes in said flat top and are clenched against the underside thereof, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus rigidly and securely fastening the two knob-loops to the cover. These extensions are originally straight, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
This improved knob combines the advantages of strength and durability and its simple construction enables it to be cheaply produced.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a cover having a solid central portion, and a skeleton-knob consisting of crossed loops each bent from a single piece of wire and comprising a substantially horizontal top bar and side-bars converging downwardly therefrom, the side bars having outwardly-bent feet resting upon the solid central portion of the cover and tenninating in extensions which pass through the cover and are clenched against the underside thereof.
2. A cover provided with a solid central portion and having a knob consisting of crossed loops each bent from a single piece of wire, the side bars of the loops having outwardly-bent feet resting upon the solid central portion of the cover and terminating in extensions which pass through openings in the cover and are clenched against the underside thereof.
