Description

(No Model.) H. J. WELTEROTH.
HINGE. No. 430,596. Patented June 17. 1890.
WlfiZSSJ. [Rue/L607? 4 @y a 77% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. WELTEROTI-I, OF IVILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE B. BREON AND FREDERICK M. ALLEN, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,596, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed September 20, 1889. Serial No. 324,566. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. \VEL'IEROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Villiam sport, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to anew and improved article of manufacture, consisting of a wire hinge of novel construction, adapted for use with coffee-pots, cooking utensils, box-doors, &c., in fact anything with which an ordinary hinge can be used, and which will be strong, durable, easily and cheaply made, and much heater in appearance than ordinary hinges.
My improved hinge can also be secured to the desired article very easily.
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view showing one of my improved hinges in position on a cofieepot.
1 and 2 represent the two parts which constitute my hinge. The first part is of a general rectangular shape, and consists of the two parallel arms 3 and 4 and the cross connecting-arm 5, all constructed of asingle piece 0 of wire of any desired variety, such as the ordinaryblack wire, or of tinned, nickel, iron, steel, gold, brass, or silver. Each of the parallel arms 3 and 4 is bent slightly at its center, so that when the lower portion of each of said arms is secured to the desired article the upper part thereof and the cross-arm 5 will lie close to the cover and body of the article, as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 2. WVhen the two parts are placed together, the cross-arms 5 and 9 will be parallel. It will now be seen that the two parts will move on each other by reason of the arm 5 working in the loops 8 8, and that a very perfect joint is formed. It will further be seen that in this form the part 2 can only move a certain distance with relation to part 1, for the reason that the cross-piece 9 of the arms 6 and 7 when thrown back will be arrested by arms 3 4 of part 1.
The outer ends of the arms 3 and 4 and 6 and 7 are secured to the two parts of the desired article in any suitable way, either by soldering or by staples, &c.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wire 2, having bent arms 6 7, loops 8 S,and cross-bar 9, in combination with a wire 1, having bent arms 3 4:, and cross-arm 5, said arm 5 passing through the loops 8 8, as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY J. WVELTEROTH.
