PATENT oFF-ICE.;
JOHN WESLEY SAU'ER, OF LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY.
DISPLAY BOX.
Application filed January 26, 1927. Serial No. 163,705. i
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes for displaying cigars, candy and the like, andhas for its primary object to provide a false bottom together with means for enabling the raising of the bottom so that the box may have the appearance of being substantially filled,
dicate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is a top plan view of an open 'box constructed in accordance with the present invention. f
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal section therethrough for more clearly disclosing the 3o manner of supporting the false bottomy therein as Well as the manner of permitting the same to be readily raised or lowered.
Figure Sis an elevation of one end of the box, and l Figure is a perspective of a pin member to which .the raising wire or cord is attached so as to facilitate the securing of the pulling end of the cord or wire to the bot tom or end of the box for maintaining the false bottom in raised position. l
Now having particular reference to the drawing, 5 indicates the body of a conventional cigar, candy or the like box, including a bottom wall 6, side walls 7-7 and end walls 8-8. The inventionfurther consists of a false bottom wall 9 of a size to enable the same to be readily raised and lowered within the box but yet to substantially fill a horizontal area within said box. The end walls 8 8 of this box are formed adjacent their upper edges and at their opposite ends with openings 10410 in substant-ially horizontal alignment as indicated in Figure 2. Furthermore, the false bottom 9 is formed adjacent its four corners with openings 11, and secured through the openings lO-lO of one end wall 8 are the opposite ends vof a predetermined length of fine I wire or cord l2, which cord or wire is thence extended .downwardly through the openings v j ll at the adjacent end of the false ybottom 9 after which the same is extendedy horizontally beneath the false bottom and thence passed upwardly through the openings in the opposite ends thereof, and through the openings l0 in the opposite end wall of said box 5. center thereof is a. thumb tack or other suitable pinfastener 13 adapted for forcible en` gagement within the end or bottom wall of therbox as clearly indicated in Figure 2. Obviously after the false bottom 9 has been raised by pulling upon thel center of the cord or wire and thence forcing the pin fastener into the box, the false bottom 9 will bey Secured' to the cord or wire at the 'I maintained at a predetermined elevated position within said box with the result that the purchaser of the goods labors under the impressionthat insomuch that the goods upon the false wall are arranged at the top of thebox there must be one. or more layers of the goods remaining, and therefore such raised goods are still in fresh condition.
Having thus described. the invention, what I claim is The combination with ka cigar box having a bottom, side `and end walls, each of the end walls being formed with a pair 'of openings adjacent the upper edge thereof and adjacent the front and rear -sidesvof the box; lof a false bottom loosely arranged within the box, and provided with an opening at each corner, a length of cord bent back upon itself intermediate its ends, the free ends of the cord extending upwardly through the openings at one end of the false bottom, and through the adjacent openings in the adjacent end wall of the box, the extremities of the cord being secured to Vsaid end of the box adjacent the respective' openings formed therein, the intermediate portions of the tener permanently carried by the bend in cord being disposed beneath the false botthe cord for forcible engagementwith the v tom adjacent the respective side edges thereoutside of the box for supporting the false 10 of, Saidr cord extending upwardly through bottom lin any vertically adjusted position the opening in the opposite end of the false in the cigar box.
