6 Claims.
This invention relates to boxes for packing, shipping and displaying various kinds and classes of merchandise and especially Christmas and greeting cards; and the object of the invention is to provide a box of the class described comprising a box proper including a hinged cover with two or more tray portions disposed therein, with means on one of said tray portions for supporting the same in inclined and display position in connection with the cover when the latter is moved into open position and when supported in an upwardly inclined position; a further object being to provide a cover proper with an easel device for supporting the same in an upwardly inclined position and with an easel or other bracing member on the under surface of the tray for supporting said tray in an outwardly extended position with respect to the open cover in order that the merchandise placed on display may be brought close to the purchaser, and at the same time, maintaining the tray in such position as to prevent accidental displacement of the articles therefrom; a still further object being to provide a container of the class described which when in its extended or display position will occupy a lesser amount of counter or table space, thus providing for a greater number of displays upon a given area; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efiicient in use, and. which is constructed as hereinafter'described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a device made according to my invention in extended position.
'Fig. 2 is a cross section through the device shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a cross section through the device in collapsed or closed position.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification; and,
Fig. 5 is a face view of a part of the construction shown in Fig. 4.
For the purpose of illustrating one method of carrying my invention into effect, I have shown in the accompanying drawing a box or container 6 having a hinged cover 1. Normally arranged within the box are two supplemental box members or trays 8 and 9 disposed one above the other and separately attachable and detachable with respect to the container. Each tray 8, 9 is divided by suitable partition elements, all designated at H3, into a plurality of spaces or compartments H in which greeting cards or other articles may be arranged for shipment and display. F5
In the manufacture and sale of greeting cards, it is customary to include cards and the envelops therefor in said compartments. The compartments may be all of the same size or vary in size to suit the different sizes of cards and envelops 10- employed.
In carrying my invention intoeffect, I provide means for supporting one of the trays of the container in a forwardly extended display position so as to reduce the transverse counter space 15' occupied by the complete display and at the same time maintain the cards and envelops against accidental displacement from the displayed tray, and also bringing the said display tray closer to the purchaser to facilitate examination or in spection of the cards arranged therein.
In'Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I accomplish this result by providing the lower surface or face of the tray 9 with a relatively wide support or bracing member l2, the attached end of which is folded to forma flange portion I3 glued, riveted or otherwise secured to the tray 9 so that the member l2 may normally lie flatly upon the bottom of the tray or be extended as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing to support the lower end portion 9a of the tray 9 above and forwardly of the hinged side wall la of the cover I, thus maintaining the tray 9 at a lesser degree of inclination than the inclination of the cover 1.
, From a consideration of Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, it will appear that the upper side edge of the tray seats or nests within the upper edge of the cover I and the lower end of the bracing member l2 rests in the corner po-rtion'of the lower hinged side Id of the cover. The cover l 40 is supported in its upwardly inclined position by an easel strip l4 secured to the outer face of the cover, preferably centrally thereof. This strip has foldable side portions l5, one of which is shown and these side portions are held in position by a lock strip [6 in the conventional manner or such as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing. In this connection, it will be understood that the illustration in Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing is more or less diagrammatic. In some instances, the upward inclination of the cover I may be increased by constructing the easel support accordingly, which would operate to advance the lower edge 9a of the tray 9 forwardly a greater degree. The only thing to be guarded against is to eliminate interference of the lower edge 9a with the tray or cards placed on display within the box proper or contained within the tray 8.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, I have shown a, slight modification wherein I have substituted for the member l2, a pair of easel supports I! which are cut and formed from the bottom wall of the tray I8, the latter being otherwise similar to the tray 9. These easel supports I! when folded on the lines Ha at right angles to the bottom wall of the tray may be retained against displacement by the channeled retaining strips or members I9. With this construction, the supports for the tray I8 are disposed at the side portions thereof, and any number of these members may be employed. A number of the members I2 may likewise be employed, depending entirely upon the length of the container or tray and the type of merchandise displayed thereon.
By providing a display container of the class described, a merchant may quickly and easily set up the container in display position and as easily repack the same for storage whenever desired. By virtue of the simplicity of the construction, the desired result is accomplished without any added expense or increase in cost of manufacture which would be detrimental in view of the added merit and utility of the product. With my improved construction, a greater number of cards or other articles may be placed on display by reason of the exposure of the greater number of the compartments in the trays of the container.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A'di splay container of the class described comprising a box proper including a hinged cover, a plurality of trays contained within the box in shipment thereof and within which articles of merchandise are arranged, means on the container for supporting the cover thereof in an upwardly inclined open position, and means for supporting one of the trays in connection with the cover with the lower edge of said tray arranged above and forwardly of the lower hinged side of said cover, said means comprising a member on the bottom wall of the tray engaging the hinged side wall of said cover.
