DISPENSING AND DISPLAY BOX Filed Feb. 4, 1926 John T. MaKinSfry GHQ: new
Patented June 15, 1926,
JOHN '1. IVICKINSTRY, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
DISPENSING AND DISPLAY BOX.
Application filed. February 4, 1926.
My invention relates to a box designed for use to display certain types of merchandise, such to instance as candies and other confectioneries, and also to facilitate the dispensing of the contained goods in less than box qijiantities.
One object of my invention is the effective and attractive displaying of the goods contained in the box, so long as any part thereof remains, while another object is to give convenient access to the goods for the purpose of dispensing small quantities thereof without thereby interfering with the effectiveness or attractiveness of the display.
My invention consists of a. box having two parts, one forming an inner or goods holding part and the other a cover or outer part telescoping with the first part, which inner section is provided with a tray forming an uppermost layer and an opening in one end through which the contents beneath the tray may be drawn upon to supply the demand for the goods without having to disturb the uppermost layer in the tray.
The features of novelty possessed by the box and upon which patent protection is desired, will first be described and then par ticularly set forth in the claim. terminating this specification.
T he accom uinying drawings illustrate a box embodying my invention in a preferred form.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through the box, the parts thereof being in the relative positions used when in combined displaying and dispensin position.
Figure 2 is a section of the dispensing end of the inner box section taken upon a plane which may be the same or one parallel to that of Figure 1, the same showing the condition existing before the edges of the dispensing door have been freed.
In the sale of goods of small size, such for example as candies and confections generally, which goods are quite commonly received by the retailer in boxes, it is desirable for purposes of attractive display, that the boxes present a full appearance, so long as any material quantity of the contents remain. To secure this while making the main body of the boxes readily accessible for retail dispensing, is the principal object of my invention.
The most common type of box used for this purpose is the pasteboard box, consisting of the container and a cover, the cover Serial No. 85,894.
being often as deep as the container, thus making a telescopic box. It is such a box which illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the box illustrated, 2 represents the outermost or cover section and l the inner or containing section. The container section has supporting ribs or brackets: 4, carrying a displaying tray 3, positioned at the top of the box. iVhen positioned for display the outer or cover section is inverted and the container set therein, supported therein at an incline by resting one end on the end wall of the outer section.
The end wall of aised end of the container, as the box is manufactured and filled, has a dispensing opening cut therefrom or with its ecges scored so that separation along its edges is facilitated. Preferably the body of the be is out nearly or quite through, along at least three sides and the thin covering or surfacing paper extended in integral condition over the cut or score, as at 52. The lower edge 53 of the door section 51, functions as a hinge.
Vi hen the box is used for displaying and dispensing the: product, the scored or cut edges of the door 51 are freed by cutting or breaking it free from the rest of the end, which makes an. opening of ample size through which to withdraw the goods without disturbing the tray 3. The vertical width of this door is preferably made substantially that of the space beneath the tray and in the horizontal direction, somewhat less than the width of the box, thereby leaving vertical sections 11 at each side of the door. These strengthen this end of the box and make it capable of supporting the weight of the box and its contents without collapsing or bending over sideways.
hat I claim as my invention is A combined dispensing and display box connorising two telescoping box members of like depths, a display tray fitting the inner box, said inner box having means for sup porting said tray at its upper open face, said inner box having a section at one end cut free on three sides to form a dispensing opening, lying wholly below the tray and terminating short of the side margins of said end to thereby leave integral vertical stiffening bars at each side margin.
Signed at Seattle, Washington this 16th day of January 1926.
JOHN T. MOKINSTRY.
