MELVIN wnnsrnn, or INDEPENDENCE, IOWA;
PATENT OFFICE.
REENFOBCED DISPLAY AND SHIPPING CASEL' Application filed December 11, 1924. Serial No. 755,269.
My invention relates to improvements in reeni orced display and shipping cases, and the object or" my improvement is to supply a case ha-vingan open top and a stepped bottom, for the display of packets of seed or other merchandise, and in which the parts of the case are made up of apposed compartments fitted together between side walls, to thus strengthen the case against both transverse and longitudinal strains so that in use for displaying goods, or while being transported, the case will have a mar:- imum of resistance consistent with its weight.
This invention also constitutes an improvement upon my stepped compartment case, patented to me by United States Patent No. 1,460,185, issued June 26, 1923.
The above object I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described r case. Fig. 2 is a vertical section from front to rear of said case, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the compartment devices as separated from the case. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are respectively plans or views of constituent parts of the case compartments developed on a plane before bending and assembling into united structures, and in which the dotted lines indicate lines of bending.
The case and its compartments shown are merely illustrative of the invention, as all may be considerably varied in shape, dimensions and otherwise without departing from my invention.
The side walls of the case shown atlhave' apart by means of a swinging flap 10 hinged at 11 to the sloped or stepped bottompf the case. This feature isshown in my sa1d patent, hence will not be mentioned further here.
The side walls 12, as also the compartments may be constructed from fiber hearth whether solid or as shown, of cellular or corrugated material, being both light and inexpensive for the uses thereof.
The case has any desired or similar compartments arranged-and assembled together in stepped relation. Each compartment has a low front ledge or wall 3, a higher rear wall 6, like side walls 5 and. 7 with top edges sloped to conform to the abutting parts of the inclined top edges of the wall parts 12, and a bottom 4. The uppermost and rearmostcompartment is similarly constructed with a angles of the wall parts 12.
These compartments may be apposed to lit together in a stepped relation between and fitting said side walls 12 as shown, and abutting edges may be sealed or connected together by means of sealing strips as at 12 and 13. To provide separating means between the side walls of each compartment, all the front and rear walls thereof may be apertured at 14 in line to receive a cord 15 therethrough, so placed as to divide the compartments fractionally, so that packets of different kinds of seeds may be kept separate therein.
While the compartments may have its walls and bottom joined in any suitable or convenient manner, I have shown in Figs. 4 t0 6 inclusive blank parts out appropriately to be bent along the dotted lines by creasing, to be assembled to make a compartment shown in Fig. 3. The arrangement of these parts is obvious. The parts 6 (or 8) provide the backs, the parts 5 and 7 (or 9) the ends, and the part 8 the "front of each compartment, the parts 4 being the bottoms, with the abutting edges sealed by sealing strips. In this manner the ends and partitions of the case are doubled, so that this reenforcing makes the case very strong.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: I
A shipping and display case, composed of spaced side walls and a plurality of open topped receptacles secured therebetween in higher rear wall 8 which extends upwardly to the upper rear stepped relation, each receptacle being coin posed of two plates, one plate furnishing a relatively high rear Wall with a shaped and bent end tab to serve as a side closure, and the other plate bent longitudinally to {up nish a relatively low front Wall and a bottom part, said front Wall part having a shaped and bent end tab to serve as a side closure opposite the first-mentioned side closure tab, said side closure tabs being secured to said side Walls and the abut-ting front and rear Walls of the receptacles being secured together.
In testimony whereof I at'fix my signature.
