DISPLAY BASKET Filed Sept. 23, 1938 Patented Apr. 8, 1941 DISPLAY BASKET Erwin C. Islieb, East Hartford,
The J. B. Williams Company,
Conn., assignor to Glastonbury,
Conn, a corporation of Connecticut Application September 23, 1938, Serial No. 231,324
1 Claim.
My invention relates to the class of devices which are employed more particularly for counter display of merchandise, as toilet articles, etc., and an object of my invention, among others, is the production of a basket for such purpose that is made from foldable material, as paper, which may be disposed fiat for shipping purposes and which may be readily folded into its basket form.
One form of a device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a view of a blank from which my improved basket may be folded.
Figure 2 is an isometric perspective view showing the blank in a partially folded state.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the blank further folded toward its final shape.
Figure 4 is another similar view showing the completed basket,
In Figure 1 of the drawing the blank from which the basket is formed is illustrated, this blank including a front fold 5 which comprises the front of the folded basket, side folds Ii, a back fold I, and a bottom fold 8. The front fold 5 is provided with a reenforcing front fold 9 while the side folds 6 have reenforcing side folds I0. Said front fold 5 also has a supplemental bottom II and the side folds 6 each has a supplemental bottom fold I2, all as shown in Fig. l of the drawing, said folds II and I2 being located at the extreme ends, that is, at the ends of the folds 9 and Ill.
One side fold 6 has a securing tuck I3 of T- shape providing an anchoring tongue I4 to enter and be locked in a securing slot I5 in the back fold I, although it is obvious that this tuck and slot may be reversed, the tuck being on the back fold and the slot in the side fold. The bottom fold 8 is provided with a tuck I6 for securing the bottom in place in the folded structure as will be hereinafter described.
In folding the blank into the basket form shown in Fig. 4 the sides are bent on the dotted lines IT between the front fold and the side folds, and the back fold 'I is bent on the dotted line It between it and the side fold 6 to which it is attached, and the tuck I3 is inserted in the slot l5 and secured therein by means of the tongue I I, the structure now being in the tubular form as shown in Fig. 2. The reenforcing front fold 9 may now be bent on the dotted line I9 to lie against the front fold 5 on the inside of the tube and the reenforcing folds ID are bent in a similar manner on the dotted lines 20 to lie against the inside of the side folds 6. As the folds 9 and III are bent inwardly as just described the several folds II and I2 will be automatically bent on the dotted lines 2| and 22, respectively, to rest against one another and provide a supplemental bottom for the basket. These bottom an advanced folded condition from the tubular form shown in Fig, 2 being shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
The back fold I has an extension 25 projecting above the edge of the basket at the back thereof, and this fold may serve to contain printed matter, advertising the contents of the basket and setting forth its desirable characteristics. i
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
I claim:
A flat one-piece blank for a display basket, said blank including a series of substantially alined folds comprising a front fold, side folds projecting from opposite sides of the front fold and a back fold projecting from the outer side edge of one of said side folds, said front, side and back folds when in folded and operative position forming the front, side and back walls of the basket, said side and back folds having their lower free edges constituting the bottom marginal edges thereof and free of extensions, a locking tongue and slot connection between the outer end of the back fold and the side fold spaced from the back fold to secure the blank in basket form, reenforcing side folds projecting from the top edges of said side folds and front fold and secured to their respective folds along fold lines, supplemental bottom folds projecting from the free top edges of each of said reenforcing side folds and secured thereto along fold lines, said supplemental bottom folds each having a dimension substantially corresponding to the bottom of the basket, a bottom fold projecting from the lower edge of the front fold opposite the reenforcing side fold thereon, and a tuck projecting from the lower edge of the bottom fold for insertion in the folded structure to hold the bottom structure in place, said back fold having a rigid and integral extension projecting upwardly from the upper portion thereof above the upper edge of the basket to a distance at least equal to the depth of the basket.
