CROFTON C.'HOLDEN, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO ROYAL GOMB COMPANY, OF LEOMINSTER, MASSACHUSETTS,
SETTS.
.A CORPORATION OF MASSACHU- COVERED BOX.
Application filed .Tune 9, 1926. Serial No. 114,809.
This invention relates to a covered box adapted tor general use but particularly designed for holding cards or cigarettes or other similar articles in an upright position.
It is the general object of my invention to provide a covered box t'or such purposes, in which the objects will be securely protected, and from which they may be very easily removed.
With this general object in view, an important 'feature of my invention relates to improved means for ele ating the contents as the cover is opened, whereby the contents are ren dered more easily accessible.
A further object of my invention relates to the provision ot an upv Yardly-Inovable pivoted cover, permanently attached to the box and effective to act as a brace for holding the box upright or rearwardly inclined when the box is open.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Several forms of the invention are shown in the drawings in which Fig. 1 is a sectional front elevation of one form of my improved box;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken along the line 2-2 in Fig. l;
Fi g. B'is a detail sectional view, taken along the line 3-3 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the box with the cover open;
F ig. 5 is a similar view but showing the cover in a different position Fig. 6 is a sectional end elevation of a modified construction;
Fig. 7is a sectional end elevation of a second modification; and
Fig. 8 is an end View of the box shown in Fig. r, with the cover open.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, I have shown my improved box as comprising a casing having ends 10. sides 11 and a bottom 12. I have also provided a cover 13 having depending arms 14 positioned outside of and adjacent the box ends 10. A supporting memoer or false bottom 15 is mounted within the casing and is provided with upwardly extending portions or arms 16 at each end ofthe box. Studs 18 extend through the arms 14.- and 16. the intermediate portions'ot the studs extend ing through slots 19 in the box ends 10.
lVhile the box may be made of any suitable material, celluloid is commonly employed.
The sides 11 (Fig. 2) preferably extend upwardly slightly above the. ends 10, so that the cover not project substantially above the edges of the sides 1l.
lVhen it is desired to open the box, the cover 13 is pulled upwardly and is then swung to the rear, as indicated in Fig. 4, thus opening the box and at the same timeelevating the contents C to a position where the cigarettes or cards or other articles will be conveniently accessible.
The cover 13 may also be swung downward to the position shown in Fig. forming a brace for the box and supporting the same in a rearwardly inclined position in which the contents may be displayed or conveniently removed.
IVhile I have described the box as being preferably provided with a bottom 12, it will be evident that this part of the box is not essential and that a satisfactory box for many purposes may be constructed with the outer bottom 12 omitted.
When the box is to be used for holding cards or other thin sheet material, I find it desirable to provide a U-shaped retaining member 20, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 3. This member 20 may be in the form of a thin strip of celluloid cemented underneath the supporting member 15 and having end portions projecting upwardly and pressing yieldingly outward against the sides 11 of the casing. This construction prevents the cards or other similar articles from slipping downward through any narrow crack which might appear between the supporting member 15 and the side walls 11.
In Fig. 6 I have indicated a slightly modil fied structure, in which the arms of the cover 26 are also provided with slots 22. in
'addition to the slots 28 in the box ends'29,
as previously described. This double slotted arranger'nentl allows the cover 26 to be raised to a greater height, and also permits the arms 25 to be of greater length, so that the box may be braced and supported in an upright or substantially upright position if desired. In other respects, the construction is as previously described, with the exception that in this figure I have shown the outer bottom of the box omitted.
13 when seated on the ends 10 will.
In Figs. 7 and 8, I have shown an additional modification of my invention in which the cover 30 is made of substantial depth, and the inner' supporting member is omitted. The extra depth of the cover permits the contents C to project permanently above the top of the casing 3l, so that it is not necessary'to raise the contents asv the cover is lifted. The cover 30 is permanently attached to the casing 3l by depending arms 3:2 having studs 33 extending through slots 34 in the ends of the casing 3l. rIhe cover is thus permanently secured to the casing but may be raised or lowered a limited distance relative thereto and may also be swung about its pivot studs 33, after being raised above the upper edges otl the casino'.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, other- Wise than as set forth in the claims, but what member having portions extending upward.
inside of said box ends, and studs connecting the arms of said cover and the upwardly extending portions of said supporting member at each end of the box, said studs extending through slots in the box ends and being' limited in movement thereby.
2. A box comprising a casing having ends and sides, a cover permanently secured thereto and having arms extending downward outside of the box ends, a supporting member for the contents of the box, said member having portions extending upward inside of said box ends, said upwardly extending inside portions being connected through slots in the box ends to said cover arms, and lsaid supporting member being raised by upward movement of said cover.
3. A box comprising an outer casing having ends and sides, and a cover permanently attached thereto and having arms extending downward outside said box ends, said cover having a pivotal stud-and-slot connection with said box and being movable to a raised open position and also to a rearward position in which said cover is effective to act as a supporting brace for said box.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
