FOLDING MATCH BOOK Filed May 9, 1945 INV NTOR. Auqus-r 15cc.
m'pgawr/g ATT ZUEY.
Patented Nov. 2, 1948 UNITED STATES My invention relates to afolding match book of the typeswhich lendsitselffor use. as an adver-' tisin g medium.
One object of the invention is to produce an improved folding match book of the type set forth.
A further object of the invention is to produce a folding match book the match elements of which may be formed to .simulate any desired article, such as bottles, pencils, or other articles, the structure being such that the battery, or bank, of match elements are adapted to lie substantially flat and parallel to the base and cover of a folding match book and are also adapted to be elevated to a position substantially normal to the base of the match book after the cover has been opened.
These and other objects are effected by my invention as will be apparent from the following description and claim taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. 1 represents a plan view of a folding match book embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the match book shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the match book shown closed;
Fig. 4 is a section on line IV-IV of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a battery of matches shown detached.
Referring to the drawings and particularly to Fig. 1, there is shown a blank IB formed of cardboard or similar flexible and inexpensive material and including a base portion l2 and a cover portion It. The cover It is adapted to be folded over the base as shown in Fig. 3. The marginal portion i6 is folded over the adjacent end of the base 52 and is coated on its outer surface to provide a match striking area. The structure thus far described forms no part of the invention and may be conventional.
In order to carry out my invention, I provide a false cover formed of a portion l8 which overlies a substantial portion of the base l2 and end tabs 20 and 22. The tab 20 is secured to the inner side of the marginal portion 16 of the base and the tab 22 is provided with a marginal portion 24 which is secured to the base portion as at 26. The tabs 20 and 22 are scored as at 28 and 30, and the junction of the tab 22 with the marginal portion is scored as at 32 so as to hinge the false cover portion I8 to the base I2 for movement from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the position shown in Fi 2.
The falsescoverportionriiliis providew withislots; 3rthrnugh awliichacorresponding number of'rows:
match elements, is scored as at 32 so as to provide 7 a tab or marginal portion 44 which has a hinged relation to the match elements. As will be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, the match elements 36 and the tab 44 may lie fiat on the base i2 or the match elements may assume a position normal to the base and to the tab 44.
In assembling a folding match book embodying my invention, the marginal portions 44 of the rows or banks of matches are first secured in parallel spaced relation to the base as'best shown in Fig. 2. The false cover is then placed over the base with the match elements extending through the slots 35, the tab 20 is secured to the tab [6 and the marginal portion 24 is secured to the base l2. The parts now assume the position shown in Fig. 2. The false cover and the match banks are then pressed flat against the base as shown in Fig. 1, and the cover is folded over the base as shown in Fig. 3.
When it is desired to use a match, the cover is opened and by pulling up on the marginal tab IS, the false cover portion I8 is pulled into spaced parallel relation to the base. Since the match elements extend through the slots 34 in the cover portion i8, the banks of matches will be moved from their prone position against the base to the vertical position shoWn in Fig. 2. This movement of the parts calls the attention of the user to the matter advertised by the shape of the match elements or inscribed on the match elements or on the interior of the base l2 and cover is. With the matches erected as shown in Fig. 2, the user pulls out one of the matches which is now detached along the score or perforation 42 and withdrawn through the corresponding slot 34. The book is now closed, as shown in Fig. 3, to expose the striking surface of the tab 16 preparatory to the striking of the match.
It will be noted that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2, the striking surface of the tab 16 is not readily accessible so that, as a safety measure, the operator finds it necessary to close the match book before striking the detached match.
What is claimed is:
A folding match book comprising a blank formed of two hinged portions foldable one upon the other so that one of said portions constitutes a base and the other of said portions constitutes a cover, a marginal strip hingedly connected to, and foldable upon, the end of said base remote from said cover, a false cover overlying said base and having tabs at opposite ends thereof, means securing the tab on one end of said false cover to said marginal strip, means connecting the tab on the other end of said false cover to said base, said tabs being hinged to said false cover in such a manner that when said marginal strip is folded upon the adjacent end of said base, said false cover lies substantially fiat against said base and when said strip is positioned at an angle to the plane of said base, said false cover will be spaced from said base, said false cover having at least one slot therein extending substantially parallel REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
