WE LL THEQGRE SNAP-UP BK MATCH FOLDERS Theodore Wili, Syosset, N .Y., assignor to Fund-Del Inc., Syosset, N .Y., a corporation of New York Application March 5, 1959, Serial No. 797,438
2 Claims. (C1. 20G-29) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in match book folders.
construction of an improved match book folder which will protect the user from inadvertent simultaneous lighting of the matches in the folder and at the same time provide a novel advertisement display on opening the match book. The folder provides an improved construction which facilitates removal of the matches from the folder.
As one object, the present invention proposes forming a match book folder with an inner shield panel adapted to normally lie in folded superposed position over the matches and between the matches and the outer front cover, the shield panel being adapted to rise up as the front cover is lifted.
A further object is to provide a folder of the character described wherein a striking area is provided on the shield panel.
A still further object is to provide a folder of the character described wherein the cover and shield panel are formed as one integral and continuous member.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, references will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a match book folder embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the folder in an open position.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank member from which the folder body may be formed.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another form of folder according to the invention.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the folder of Fig. 5 in an open position.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of another folder embodying still another form of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a sectional View on an enlarged scale taken on line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the folder of Figs. 7 and 8 in an open position.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a further folder embodying a further form of the invention.
Fig. ll is a perspective view of the folder of Fig. 10 in an open position.
Figs. 12 and 13 are plan views of blank members which may be employed in forming the folders of Figs. 7-9 and l0 and ll.
Referring to Figs. 1-3, there is shown a match book folder A1 consisting of a rectangular front panel 12, rear panel 14, a forward narrow rectangular panel section 16 on which is disposed a suitable match striking layer 18. A shield panel 20 is disposed between the front panel 12 talesA Patent 2,935,185 Patented May 3, y 1 9'60 rice and the matches 22 when the folder is closed with the outer free end 24 of panel 12 engaged inside of section 16. The shield panel is doubly folded transversely at 26 and 28 to provide pop-up panel sections 30, 32. The panel section 32 may be die cut at its free end 31 in various shapes. The unfolded length of panel 2t) is longer than the matches 22 and the rear panel 14. In the doubly folded condition the shield panel is retained between the top folds 34, 35 and the bottom fold 36. The panels 12, 14, 16 and 20 may be formed as a single integral unit from a single blank sheet of flexible cardboard 40 as best shown in Fig. 4. The various folds of the sheet required ,to form the folder are indicated by dotted lines. A staple 42 is inserted through section 16, fold 33 of the shield panel, the match webs 44 and 46 and the rear panel 14.
f i y A fold 48 is formed at the top of panel section 17 which More particularly, the present invention proposes the joins the front section 16 to section 17. The lower end of rectangular panel section 21 of panel 2i) is folded at its lower end at 33 where it is turned upwardly to form the section 17.
Fig. 3 shows the open condition of the folder. The shield panel effectively shields the matches 22 while one is being struck on the striking layer 18. Since the upper section 32 of panel 2i) is free from cover panel 12 it stands off therefrom permitting matches to be freely removed from the respective webs. Advertisements S0 and 52 may be located on the inner sides of panel 12 and on the front face of shield 20 so that the user sees the advertising display as he opens the cover panel. The placement of the advertising matter on the pop-up shield panel is particularly conspicuous.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6, folder A2 has the striking layer 13? disposed on panel 20 at fold 26. The placement of the striking layer near the top of panel section'21 insures that the user will see the advertising display on the panel 20 while he is striking a match on layer 18a.
The striking layer is omitted from the outer side of panel section 16 so that a further `advertising display 54 may be placed thereon.
Figs. 7-9 show another folder B1, which is formed like folders A1 and A2 except that the folder B1 is made from two blanks 40A and best shown in Figs. l2 and 13, respectively. Blank 49A when folded constitutes a separate shield panel 26a except that section 17 is omitted. The free end 29 of panel section 21 is inserted behind panel section 16 and there is secured by staple 42. The folds 26 and 28 of the panel 2% are formed in the same manner as in panel 2G to provide the pop-up sections 30 and 32 for carrying advertisements Si) and for shielding the matches 22 during striking.
Figs. 10 and 1l show folder B2 which has the same form as folder B1 being formed from two separate blank members as shown in Figs. l2 and 13. Striking section 18 is omitted from section 16 and is placed instead as in folder A2 on panel section 21 adjacent fold 26 to insure reading of the advertisement by the user. The placement of the striking surface inside the folder on panel section 21 has the further advantage that if the folder becomes accidentally wet on the exterior, the striking layer 18EL will remain dry and retain its striking characteristics. Also placement of the striking surface inside the folder provides the further clear area on section 16 for additional advertising 54. Panel 292 has a differently die cut free end 31- as best shown in Fig. ll.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. A match book folder of flexible sheet material and having a rectangular back panel, a rectangular front cover panel integral with the back panel, and a separate inner shield panel, said shield panel being longer than the back panel, a plurality of at match webs formed with ignitable ends disposed adjacent the back panel, said shield panel having three sections formed by two spaced reverse folds, said rear panel having a forwardly folded section provid ing -a ap for engaging a free end of the front panel, and a staple securing said flap, shield panel, Webs and back panel together, said shield panel having a lower end of one of the three sections engaged by said staple, there being an advertising display on the sections of the shield panel, the other two sections constituting pop-up means adapted to be extended automatically upon opening of the front cover panel, said shield panel having a die cutV free end, and a striking layer on said one section of the y longer than the back panel, a plurality of flat match webs formed with ignitable ends disposed adjacent Vthe back panel, said shield panel having three sections formed by two spaced reverse. folds, said rear panel having a forwardly folded section providing a ap for engaging a free end of the front panel, and a staple securing said flap, shield panel, webs and back panel together, said shield panel having a lower end `of one of the three sections engaged by said staple, and an advertising display on the sections ofthe shield panel, the other two sections constitnting pop-'up means adapted to be extended automatically upon opening of the front cover panel, said front panel, back panel and shield panel being integral, said shield panel being joined to said flap by a doubly folded panel section disp-osed inside'said flap between said ap and the lower end of said one section.
