1 Claim. (Cl. 206--29) This invention relates to match book constructions and more. particularly to a match book folder, and this application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application Serial Number 673,617, filed July 23, 1957.
A. primary object of the present invention is to provide a match book construction wherein the matches are protected from accidental lighting and from moisture and the user is protected from injury due to inadvertent lightin of the matches. l i
Another object of the invention is to provide a match book construction with improved means for opening the cover of the match book with a snap action.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a match book construction with a doubled front cover and an inner shield panel adapted normally to lie in superposed relation and with transverse creases in the cover and shield whereby the cover when released opens with a snap action.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a match book folder with a doubled front cover and an inner shield panel adapted normally to lie in superposed relation and with a pop-up panel disposed and arranged between the front cover and inner shield so as to rise up as the front cover is lifted from the inner shield panel.
A still further object is to provide a pop-up panel in a match book folder to serve as an advertising and display device.
Yet another object is to provide a match book folder of the character described with foldable or removable tabs on the inner shield to afford the user more convenient access to the matches under the shield.
lt is further proposed to provide a match book construction wherein the cover is permanently fastened around the matches yet is readily unfolded to gain access to the matches.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Referring in detail to the drawings, in Fig. 1 a match book construction or folder embodying one form of the invention is shown and is designated generally by the reference numeral 10. The match book constructionl or folder illustrated is preferably made of stiif material such as cardboard or the like and may be made from a single continuous strip or sheet 12 such as shown in Fig. 5. The book construction or folder is formed from the elongated rectangular-shaped narrow strip of cardboard 12 folded transversely to form a back panel section 14, a front or cover panel section 16, an inner shield panel section 18 and a front match striking panel section 20.
The back panel section 14 and the front panel section 16 are connected by narrow connecting panel sections 21 and 22 formed by transverse crease lines 24, 25 and 26, said crease lines constituting hinges.
The front or cover panel 16 constitutes .an outer shield and is a two-part panel section defined by an outer part 30 and an inner part 32 Vformed by creasing the panel midway its ends as indicated at 34. The inner part 32 of the front or cover panel 16 is connected to the inner shield panel section 18 by a narrow connecting panel section 36 formed by crease lines 38 and 40, said crease lines constituting hinges. The inner shield panel section 18 constitutes the free end of the strip 12. The strip is creased adjacent its other end as indicated by the line 42 and folded forming the front striking panel section 20. The front of the panel section 20 is suitably coated providing a striking surface 44 on which the matches to be lighted may be struck. Advertising indicia 33 may be provided on the inner part 32 of the front panel section 16 and similar advertising indicia 35 on the inner shield panel 1S.
A plurality of matches 48 have a joined base 50 which is fastened between the front striking panel section 20 and the back panel section 14 in any suitable manner such as, for example, by a staple 52 extending through the front striking panel section below its striking surface 44 thereby providing said striking panel section with a free flexible end edge 54. The matches are spaced inwardly from the edges of the rear panel to leave clear margins carrying indicia 55 representing instructions for using the folder. The inner shield panel section 18 is tapered along its long edges 56, gradually decreasing in width from its inner end to its outer free end 58 so that it is narrower than the front cover panel section 16. The outer free end 58 is tucked inside the ilexible end edge 54 of the front striking panel section 20.

When the match book construction or folder 10 is in closed condition as shown in Fig. 1, the free end 58 of the inner shield panel section 18 is tucked inside the end edge`54 of the front striking panel section 20, and the front and rear parts 30 and 32, respectively, of the front cover panel section 18 are folded together in juxtaposition and the doubled edge end portion thereof at the crease line 34 is tucked inside the end edge 54 between said end edge and the free end 58 of the inner shield as shown in Pig. l. When the parts are in this position, the panel section 21 saddles or spans the top of the matches and the connecting panel sections 22 and 36 are juxtaposed with the innermost panel section 36 urging the other connecting panel section 22 outwardly.
Upon manual withdrawal of the doubled edge end interlock with the end edge. 54 of the front striking section 2i), the front or cover section being wider than the tapered inner shield panel section readily permitting this withdrawal without interference by the inner` shield panel section, the urging action of said inner connecting panel section136 andthe inherent .flexibility of the cardboard material will spring the front cover panel section 16 outward-lyfto its Fig.' 4 position thereby permitting theinner shield panel section 18 to be readily pulled out of its interlocking position in order to. expose the matches for use, and thereby providing greater clearance for the matches. When a pop-.up panel section isV on the inner shield panel section 18 the. forcing of the outer front` or cover-- section 16 outwardly simultaneously raises and sets the pop-up panel section for better viewing. The hinge. lines 24, 25, 26, 38, 40. also assistin readily closing the. folder.
The modified.Y formA of match bookl construction or folder shown in Fig. 6 ditfers from the form of Figs.
1-.5, inclusive, in that the inner shield panel section 18V is scored with two series of perforations 60, 60 arranged i-n straight diagonal lines with respect to. the straight` yedges ofthe panel section. These scored lines are joined by. slits 61 disposed parallel to crease line 40. The pair of scored and slit lines defines a generally triangular tab. 63.` Each. slit 61 extends close to the side edge ofthe panel section leaving a short bridge 64 which must be torn by the. user if the tab is to be folded on the scored. lines as shown in Fig. 6. Of course, the tab may be fully removed: if desired; tab 63 is bent outwardly along the scored line 60 thereby exposing theimatches 48 for use.
. This form of the invention makes it possible for the user to expose the. matches by folding back one tab 63 inv order to remove a matchfrom the folder. Then, beforestriking the match, the user can fold the tab back to a position coplanar with the. panel from which it Vextends.
The tabs 63 are formed on the innershield panel sec-` tion 18 only so that the matches and foldable tabs 63v are completely covered and protected when the match folder is,` closed and the front outer cover panel section 16l provides a completelyY unbroken outer surface for safety and for advertising messages.

The remainder of the pop-up panel section 65 is free to hingealong the hinge line 6,6. Referring 'now to the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 9 and l0, the match book construction or folder 10 shown herein is of larger dimensions than those of the form of Figs. 1-5, inclusive. It differs fur Vther from the first form in that the inner shield panel section 18 is fastened behind the front match striking panel section 20 by means of a pair of staples 52. This form also differs from. the. form of Figs. 1 5, inclusive, in that a pop-up panel section bearing advertising indicia 67 is hingedly mounted on the connecting panel section- 36. In all other respects, the form of Figs. 9 and 10 is. similar to the form of Figs. l-S and similar reference numeralsA are used to indicate similar parts.
It will be understood that the match assembly shown in all forms of the invention may be inserted between the panel sections and held therein against displacement in any suitable manner, the staples shown being. only one way of fastening the matches against displacement.
WhileI have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and that various changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, andrdesire to, secure by United States Letters Patent A match book folder of vflexible material having a back panelV section, a front cover panel section, an inner shield panel section, a pair of adjacent narrow panel sections hingedly connectingv the back panel section with said front panel section, said pair of narrow panel sections being hingedly connected to each other, said front cover panel section being a double panel section with inner and outer parts hingedly connected, a front match striking panel section integral with said back panel section, a plurality of matches having a joinedbase secured at said base between. the front match striking panel section and the back panel section, said inner shield panel section covering` saidv matches, a narrow connecting panel section flexibly hinged at opposite ends and connecting one end of said inner shield panel section to the inner part of said front cover panel section, said narrow connecting panel section being disposed in juxtaposition to one of the narrow panel sections connecting the back panel section and the outer part of the front cover panel section when the folder is in closed condition soV that the front cover panel section is automatically urged to open condition, said inner shield panel having one end. disposed Y j References- Cited in the-tile of this patent Y UNITED: STATES PATENTSV 2,197,451V
