UNITED STATES r 1,662,312 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. HARTMANN AND EDWARD A. WEISS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
AUXILIARY BED BAIL AND SLAT SUPPORT.
Application filed December 13, 1926. Serial No. 154,529.
The invention aims to provide a new and improved device which will serve as an auxiliary support for side rails of a bed and will also act to effectively support the ends 5 f slats extending between saidrails, so that,
there is no danger of the slats dropping and causing possible injury to the occupants of the bed.
Vith the foregoing in view, the invention in resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described and claimed, the description being supplemented by theaccompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevation I showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view. 4
Fig. 3 is a. vertical sectional View on line 3--3 of Fig. 1. I
Fig. L is a vertical section on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. I
In the drawii'ig above briefly described, R designates the side rails of a bed. connecting the head and foot H and F thereof, in the usual way. The supports S, constituting the present invention, may be connected with the rails" R at any a desired points, and when so connected they serve as auxiliary supports for said rails, as well as supports for slats S- Each support embodies a leg 5 which is preferably of tubular form to receive the shank of a caster 6, this caster being preferably vertically adjustable by means of a nut 7. The details of the caster construction and mounting constitute no part of the present invention.
The upper end of the leg 5 is provided with two seats, one for the rail R and the other for the slat S. In the present showing. a vertical plate 8 is rigidly joined in any desired manner to the upper end of the leg and is provided with lateral flanges 9 and 10 which project in opposite directions. The flange 9 is intended to underlie the rail R- and is preferably provided with a ridge 11 along its outer edge to engage the outer side of said rail. The flange 10 acts as a support for the slat S and is provided with upstanding lugs 12 to straddle said slat and hold the latter against lateral slippage from the flange. Preferably, the parts 8, 9, 10, 11'
and 12 are cast as a single piece, which piece may be rigidly joined to the leg 5 in any desired manner.
The invention is simple and inexpensive, yet will be efiicient and reliable for the purposes intended. On account of the excellent results obtainable from the details disclosed, such details are preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, variations may be made.
We claim:
1. An auxiliary bed rail and slat support comprising a leg having a seat at its upper end for attachment to the rail, and a second seat rigid with the first named seat for supporting one end of a slatsa-id second seat embodying means to abut the longitudinal edges of the slat to hold it against slippage from the seat.
2. An auxiliary bed rail and slat support comprising a leg having a vertically disposed rigidly attached plate at its upper end for attachment to the inner side of the rail, said plate being formed with a laterally projecting flange to support one end of a slat, said flange having upstanding lugs to straddle the slat and hold the same against lateral slippage.
3. An auxiliarybed rail and slat support comprising a leg having a vertically disposed rigidly attached plate at its up er end for attachment to theinner side of the rail, said plate being formed with two flanges projecting laterally in opposite directions, one of said flanges being adapted to contact with the lower edge of the rail and the other flange constituting a slat support, said other flange having upstanding lugs to straddle the slat and hold it against lateral slippage.
at. An auxiliary bed rail and slat support I comprising a leg having a vertically disposed plate atits upper end for attachment to the rail, a slat supporting flange formed on and projecting from the side of said plate opposite to the side which engages the rail and means for holding the slat in engagement with said flange.
5. In a bed structure having two parallel I side rails, auxiliary supporting legs for said rails, means securing the upper ends of said auxiliary legs to said rails, a transverse slat extending between the upper ends of said legs, and inwardly projecting seats on said upper ends of the legs, said seats being engaged with the ends of said slat to support the latter in operative position.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto aflixed our signatures.
