FRANCIS G. GALE, OF WATERVILLE, QUEBEC; CANADA.
MATTRESS FRAME.
' Application filed November 12, 1921. Serial No. 514,575.:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS G. GALE, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, residing at \VatervillefProvince of Quebec, Dominion of Canada have invented an Improvement in Mattress Frames, of which the following description, in connection with avoiding the use of screws, bolts or rivets,
and which is also constructed so that it will close the open end of each'rail: and thus make a sanitary structure which can be easily kept free from'vermin.
I accomplish this object by making the corner fastening in two sheet metal sections, one of which is welded to the side rail and is constructed to close the end of the to the end rail and .is constructed to close the end of the side rail'and both of which are welded together. I
In order to give an understanding of the invention I have illustrated in the drawings a selected embodiment thereof which will now be described after which the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a corner of a mattress frame embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. v
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the complete corner fastening with the end rails and side rails removed. said figure showlng the corner fastening which is complemental to the fastening shown in Fig. 1.
Figs. 4 and 5 show the blanks from which each corner fastening is made.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the end of the end rail with one section of the fastening secured thereto.
Fig. 7 shows the end of the side rail with the other section of the corner fasteningsecured thereto.
, In the drawings 1 lndicates the side rail of mattress frame and 2 the end rail thereof. Both of these rails are shown as formed from rectangular tubing and the side railis arranged with its longest transverse dimension in a vertical direction while the end rail 2 is arranged with its longest transverse dimension in a horizontal direction.
The corner. fastening by which these two A rails are secured together is formed from two sheet metal members indicated at 3 and at respectively. The member etis shaped to partially embrace "the. side rail 1 and is constructed so that it can be readily spot welded to the sideofthe side rail; It isa-lso provided'with a portion adapted to close the open end of the end rail when the parts are assembled. structed so that it can be readily spot welded .to the under side of the end rail '2 I and it isfprovided with afoot portion-to rest on the top of the'si'derail and another The other section 3 is conportion which closes the open end of the side a rail when the parts are assembled. The two sections are constructed so that after they are assembled they can be readily welded together. 1 i
The sectiont is herein shown as formed from a blank?) of sheet metal of the shape shown in Fig. 4 and this is bent along the dotted lines 6 to form the shelf or supporting portion 7 and it is also bent at its upper end along the transverse dotted line 8 to form the flange Q'that is ad'apted 'to overlie the top edge of the endrail. -The section thus formed comprises the body portion 10 having the two flanges 7 and 9 extending at right angles thereto, the flange 7 constituting a support for the side rail" and the'fiange 9 overlying the top of the end rail, The other section 8 is formed with the bodyportion 11 adapted to overlie the body portion 10 of the section 4 and which is formed at its lower end with a flange or foot 12 adapted to rest on the top of the side rail 1 and, is also formed at its upper end with a transverselyextending flange 13 on which the end rail. 2 rests. wing portion 142 constructed to close the open end of the side rail 1 when the parts are as-- 'sembled.
This corner fastening section'8 can con veniently be made from a blank 15 of sheet metal having the shape shown in Fig. 5 and.
The member 3 is also formed with the blank is further bent along the vertical dotted line 18 to carry the part 14 into a right angular relation to the body of the blank and before this is done the wing portion 19 may be bent into right angular relation along the dotted line 20 so that when the part 14 is bent on the line 18 the part 19 will fold against the body ll of the blank. The 7 blank is bent along the line 17 after the part lt is folded so that the portion 13 above the line 17 folds down onto the part 19.
After the two sections have been thus made the section 4- is secured to the side rail 1 by placing the end of the side railon the rest 7 with the side of the side rail against the body 10 as shown in Fig. 7. The body then spot welded to the side of the side rail as indicatedat 22 and this can be easily done because one leg of the welding tool may be inserted into the open end of the side rail.
The corner fastening section 3 can also be easily welded to the end rail 2 by plac" the end rail on the rest 13. as shown in l 6.. and then spot welding said rest 13 to the under side of the end rail. This can also be easily accomplished because the end of the end rail is open to permit one leg of the welding tool to be inserted.
After these two sections have been welded to the side rail and end rail, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7', then they are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and when in their assembled relation the end of the end rail and the body 11 of the member 3 fit the upper portion. of the body 10 of the member t, the flange 9 of said nieieiber l overlies the top of the end rail, the rest 12 of the member rests on the top of the side rail, and the portion 14 of the member closes the end of the side rail. After the two sections have been thus assembled then the body portion 11 of the section 3 may be spot welded to the upper portion of the member 10 of the section 4 as shown at 23. A corner fastening of this construction very strong owingto the fact that the body portion 11 has the foot 12 which rests directly on the top of the side rail and thus all the weight on the end rail will be transmitted to the side rail through the body member and not through the spot we ing 23.
hen the corner fastening is completed the ends of both rails are closed thereby making the structure an extremely sanitary one.
I claim.
1. in a mattress frame, the combination with a side rail and an end rail, of a corner fasteningconnecting said rails and conipi 1?;- ing one member rigidly secured to the side rail and having a portion to close the end of the'end rail and another section rigidly cured to the end rail and having a portion to close the end of the side rail, said sections being secured together. 7
In a mattress frame, the combinat with a. tubular side rail and a tubular e rail of a corner fastening connecting si rails and comprising two sections one of which overlies and is secured to the side of the side rail and is provided with a flange to overlie the top of the end railand the other of which is secured to the bottom of the end rail and is provided with a foot to rest on the top of the side rail, the two sections being spot welded together. I,
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
FRANCIS G. GALE.
