Indiana, where I am now living and receive mail, have invented a certa-1n new and use-y ful Improvement in -Bed-Frame Corner Constructions, of which the following is a.

specification.

My invention relates to devices for coubed frames. i y

More specifically considered, it relates to bed frames in which the said corner posts are of wood, while the side rails are of fully appear.

It is also an object to provide an im proved construction and arrangement 1nvolving the use of sheetmetal for the different parts ofthe coupling, thus avoiding the use of castings, as will also hereinafter more fully appear.

To the foregoing and other useful ends my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and clai1ned.;,

It will be observed that these lugs or hooks 3 are disposed in parallel vertical planes which are also parallel with the side rail, it being also observed that these hooks are arranged in pairs above and below the side rail. The coupling member I) is troughshaped, as shown in Fig. 3, and has its vertical wall (Z provided with upper and lower slots 4 which receive the hooks 3, in the manner shown, and whereby the plate C and the vertical wall d are held flatwise to'- gether. The member I) is provided with parallel side walls 5 and 6, it being observed that the wall 5 is secured by rivets m to the web l of the angle iron side rail. The wall 6 has a portion 7 thereof cut away and bent inward to rest horizontally upon the top of the side rail, this horizontal web 7 forming a shoulder which is secured by a rivet 8 to the iange or top of the angle ironl side rail. Thus both side walls of the coupling member D are secured to the end of the side rail, but as the latter is of angle iron formation one of said walls has a portion thereof cut away and bent inward to rest.v as stated, upon the top of the side rail. By raising the side rail, in a manner that will be readily understood, the slots 4 can be readily disengaged from the hooks 3, thereby disconnecting the side rail vfrom the post. In setting up the bed frame, the couplingfmember D is presented in vertical position to the bracket plate C,- and with the slots 4 opposite the hooks 3, and the relativeformation is such that the said coupling member then readily settles into positionwith the upper ends of said slots resting firmly in the as shown, the lower edges of the hooks 3 are beveled or inclined to operate as cams for delectin'g the lower ends of said slots outward when the side rail is raised to disconnect the coulino.

if it is desired to use transverse bed slats, as the vertical flanges of the angle iron rails will then extend upwardly/to prevent endwise displacement of the slats. In other words, the .slots in the plates secured to the ends of the said rails will engage the hooks in either position of the side rails, .and thus the latter can be 'used eithery with the4 ordinary bed bottom, such as those having a frame on which is stretched a metal fabric, or with ordinary slats. In the drawings, the horizontal flange 2 of the angle iron rail is shown in position to form the top of the rail, but when the members G and the rail are turned upside down, thistlange 2 will then be at the bottom, and the vertical flange l will extend upward.

In a bed f ame, a corner post, a bracket plate secured to said post, a side rail, and a coupling member on the end Ofsaid rail, said Aplate and member having olev'ces whereby they are coupled together flatwise, and said member having parallel Vertical s ide walls which are secured to said rail, one side wall of said member being secured to the vertical flange of' said rail, and `the `other side wall having an inwardly bent portion secured to the horizontal flange of said rail. i

3. In a bedframe, a corner post, a bracket plate securedto said post, a side rail, and a coupling member on the endfof said rail,

said plate and member having devices whereby they are coupled together .ilatwise, and. said member having parallel vertical side walls which are secured to said rail, said rail being of angle iron formation, one side wall of saidv member being secured to the vertical web of said rail, and the other side wall having a portion thereof cut away and bent inward to rest on top of said rail.

4. In a bedfr'ame, a corner post, a bracket plate secured to said post, a side rail, and a cou'pling member on the end of said rail, said plate andl member having devices wherebyV they are coupled together latwise, said plate and member being of sheet metal, and said devices comprising opposite vertical edge'portions 'of said plate cut away and bent outward lto -form hooks, disposed in vertical longitudinal planes and vertical slots in said member to receive said hooks, which devices are arranged ,in pairs above and below said rail.

5. In a bed frame, a corner post, a bracket plate secured to said post, a side rail, and a coupling member on the'end of lsaid rail, Said plate and member having devices whereby they are coupled together llatwise, said rail having a top wall, and said member being trough shaped .and having an inner horizontal web vbent inward from'one lside. wall and secured to said top wall.. y

A bedstead comprising corner posts, side-rails, and a bracket plateand a coupling member for mounting the side rails on said posts, said rails andthe coupling members secured thereto being adapted for connection to the posts in different positions, one position causing one side of each rail to be uppermost, the other position causing another side of said rail to be uppermost, ind each rail being of angle ironvformation, the horizontal flange of each rail serving as either the --top or the bottom thereof, depending upon the position in which the rail is coupled to the post, said plate and member having devices whereby they are coupled together llatwise, said plate and memben being of sheet metal, and said device lcomprising opposite edge portions of saic plate out away and bent outward to form hooks, and slots -in said member to receive said hooks,- which devices are'arranged in pairs above and below said rail.
