Patented Dec. 24, 1929 PAE Fries SAM noun, or TOLEDO, OHIO CORNER FASTENING FOR BED RAILS Original application filed August 5, 1927, Serial No. 210,876.
hereinafter set forth a new, novel, strong,
durable, simple and thoroughly eiiicient means for detachably coupling the side rails of a bed to the foot and head elements thereof for the purpose of maintaining said elements in a vertical position relative to the side rails.
l Vith the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is aside elevation of a bed illustrating the corner fasteners therefor in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view in elevation partly in section illustrating one of the side rails of a bed coupled in position by corner fasteners in accordance with this invention.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in cross section of a bed illustrating a pair of corner fastenings in accordance with this invention.
A corner fastening in accordance with this invention is illustrated in connection with an article of furniture in the form of a unit inclucing a pair of side rails A, B. The side rails A, B, detachably connect with the elements G and D for not only coupling them together but for maintaining them in spaced relation. The head element C is of greater height than the footelement D although it is to be understood that the elements C and D can be constructed of any desired height.
As the side rails A. and B are of like construction, but one will be described, as the description of one will apply to the other. The side rails are oppositely disposed with Divided and this application filed February Serial No. 252,595.
respect to each other and are of angle sh ped cross section and each side rail comprises a vertically disposed portion 1 and a horizontally disposed portion 2 and with the latter extending inwardly at ri 'ht angles with respect to the bottom of the former. Secured to the i er face of the vertical portion 1, in proximity to each end thereof, and eI'tending uown tl rough the horizontal portion 2, as well as projecting a substantial distance therebelow, is a vertically disposed tapered coupling pin 3, which has its upper portion fixedly secure-cl to the inner face of the vertical portion 1 of the rail. The vertical portion 1 of each of tie rails, has projecting from its outer face, in proximity to each end thereof, a headed coupling lug 4. The pins 3 and lugs & coact with the elements 0 and D for the purpose of detachably connecting the side rails therewith, whereby the elements G and D will be coupled together and maintained in spaced relation and the manner in which the said pins and lugs associate with said elements C and D will be presently referred to. The side rails can be of any appropriate length desired and any suitable cross sectional area. When the side rails are mounted in position relative to the elements 0 and 1), they abut the inner faces of said elements, in a manner as shown in Figure 4.
The head element A includes a pair of posts 5, 6 and the foot element a pair of posts 46, 47. Each post is formed with a pair of socket forming members 72, 73, the former being arranged above the latter. Each socket forming member 72 is in the form of a vertically extending, rectangular plate integral with a post and laterally disposed with re spect to the latter. Each plate is arranged between the vertical median and outer side of a post and is of substantial thickness and width. The sockets provided by the plate open at the top edges of the plate, are vertically disposed and tapered.
Each socket forming member 73 is of T-shaped contour and includes a vertical leg or stem and a horizontal leg or head. The stem is integral with the lower face of the head at a point between its transverse center and outer end. Each member 73 is vertically disposed and is formed integral with and laterally disposed with respect to a post. The length of the horizontal leg corresponds to the width of a post. The vertical leg is positioned between the vertical median and outer side of the post, and arranged inwardly with respect to a socket forming member 72. The width of the horizontal leg corresponds to the width of a member 72 and such leg is arranged below and spaced from .the latter. That part of the horizontal leg or head between the vertical leg or stem and the inner side of a post is formed with a vertically disposed tapered opening constituting a socket 75.
' The socketforming members on the post 5 project from the forward faces of the latter and those on the post 6 extend from the rear faces of the latter. The sockets 74: are adapted to removably receive the studs 4 and the sockets 7 5 the pins 8. The socket forming members in connection with the studs and pins couple the side rails to the head and foot elements. The pin 3 engages a member 73 inwardly of a member 7 2.
The sockets 7 4 formed by the members 72 are disposed at right angles with respect to the sockets 75 formed by the members 73. The pins 3 are disposed at right angles to the studs 4: and arranged inwardly of studs 4. The sockets 74, 75, pins 3 and studs 4 are constructed to provide a wedging action therebetween when theside rails are congected to the head and foot elements of the corner fastening, in accordance with this invention can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet
It is thought the many advantages of a 2. A corner fastening for beds comprising in combination, a side rail in the form of an angle iron, a horizontally disposed headed stud projecting from the outer side face of one of the flanges of the rail, a vertically disposed coupling pin attached to the inner side face of such flange, of greater length than the width of the rail, extending through the other flange of the rail and depending below the bottom thereof, said pin positioned inwardly with respect to said stud, a vertically disposed, rectangular member carried by a bed post and provided with a socket opening at the top thereof, and a Vertically disposed T-shaped member carried by such post, arrangedbelow and spaced from the rectangular member and having the inner side of its head provided with a socket extending at right angles with respect to the socket in the rectangular member, the socket in the rectangular member receiving the stud and the socket in the T-shaped member receiving the pin.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
SAM FORD.
it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
