Specification of Letters ratent.
, Application filed January 13, 1913. Serial No. 741,674.
To all 'whom t may concern. Beit miown that l, Monats B. UKN, a
' citizen ot the United States, residing` at Chca o, 1n the county of Coeli and State of ,5 ll inois, have invented certain new and use! ful Improvements in Bed-Rail Attachments,
of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to improved means ot attachment between the side 'rails and o 4coroner posts et' metal beds and has for its principal' object the provision ot a bed rail attachment which shall be secure, neat, easily connected and disconnected, and in which under the strains incident to use. s
el further object of the invention is the standardization of parts whereby they are .adapted to interchangeable use with rails ot ierent size and posts of all degrees of curvaturesfrom an inch in diameter tothose et s lia-re cross section. A v 4 's invention may be considered as in some respects an improvement upon the construction forming the subject matter of my "3b Patent No. 1,001,882, dated August 29, 1911, ythe present construction being superior to the former inmany respects which will be Y apparent as the description of the same pron ceeds.
In order that the invention may be readily vunderstood by persons working in this art l have herein shown and described the same in connection with a preferred form of construction. However, as the invention is manifestly capable ot embodiment in other and varied forms of construction the drawing and description are to be taken as illus-- trative and not in an unnecessarily' limiting` sense.
ln the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a bed corner illustrating the improved form of bed rail attachment; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig.
1 with the bed rail detached; Fig; 3 is a ver-` tical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4L through a bed rail. yand corner post "at the point ot attaohmenm'Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on the yline 4-4 of Fig. 3; Figc is a perspective view showing the end of the bed rail; Fig. 6 is aisilnilar view of the attachment plate disconnected from the. rail; and Fig. i" is a similar detail of the pm retaining strip..
to the drawings the portion of' shown comprises a corner post designated by the reference numeral 11, a,
Patented oet. as, i913;l
cross bar 12and the vertical end bars connected together in the usual marmer.
In Figs. 1 and -2 the, corner posts .are` shown as round, while in Figs. 3 ande' the post is shown as square and is designated by the reference numeral 11, the invention being applicable equally `well to corner posts` o f round or square cross section and of any size. without change in the iorm or site of the parts serving to attach the lside rail and post.
To each` of the corner posts of the bed is permanently attached a boX-lile bracket 14, clearly shown in Fig. 2. This* bracket is formed from a blank of sheet metal which is so shaped and-bent as to provide an ein ternally concave end wall. 15 having upwardly and downwardly projecting tongues 16 and 17 respectively which; are then-angularly bent to the horizontal position indicated in Fig. 2, these tongues being pro vided with apertures 18'and 19. The metal extends in spaced parallel relation from the end Wall 15 in side walls 2O and 21. The side wall 2() has an upwardly extending tongue 22 which is likewise bent at right angles and serves as a point of attachment for the cross rail 23 by means ot the rivet or rivets 24C. Iltlie terminal portion of the material is angularly bent as indicated at 25, to abut against the opposed side wall 21,' while the terminal portion ot the niaterial forming the side wall 21 is likewise' opposite sides of the bed are rigidly connected together by the cross rail 23 and are provided With tongues 16 and' 1'? by means of which they are attached to the respective corner posts.
The corner post is provided with a pair of horizontally disposed slots 29 and 30 which are adapted to 4snugly receive the apertured tongues 16 and 17- and to permit the end wall 15 of the bracket to bear snugly against the exterior face of the corner post.'
To attain a close bearing Contact of the bracket with the exterior wall of posts varying in curvature from a round post of small diameter as indicated in Figs. -1` and 2, to a square post of any size, as indicated in Figs. 3 and e, and including round posts of larger' diameter, the curvature of the concave end vvall l5 is such as.to conform to the curvature of a post of small size so that when applied to round posts ot larger size or to square posts the bearing contact Will be along the `vertical lines of the corners of the box bracket as indicated aty 3l and 32 in Fig. l Where'lgv the bracket Will have a firm bearing in every case.
The apertures` 1S and 19 are of dissimilar size so as to accommodate the tivo end portions ot' a wedge pin In the form of construction illustrated the aperture 19 is shoivn as of larger sizeto adapt the pin to be inserted from below. The size and inclination of the vvedge pin 33 is such as vvhen driven home" to draw the bracket firmliv against the exterior vvall of the post bj? means of the tongues 1G and 1T. Prior to theinsertion of the pin aretaining strip 3l of thin malleable metal, a strip of tin being suitable. and having a transversel;Y disposed slot 35 is slipped over the tongue 17 and lies betvveen the aperture l?) and the inner uall of the post. After the pin is inserted and driven home the loiver end ot the strip 3l is bent as indicated at across and beneath the head of the pin and serves etlectuall;Y toy prevent its accidental dislodginent.
The construction thus far described serves to equip the corner'posts of each bed end with a paiiI ot box brackets innnovabbv attached to the corner pests and also transverselv connected to eachr other by means of the cross rail these brackets forming a substantially integral part of the bed ends and serving in connection ivitli the attachments carried bv the side rails as a .meanf` for detachabljvY connecting' the side rails to the bed ends.
The side rails 3C are shoivn as of' the usual angular construction having a horizontal portion 3T and a vertical portion 3S.
Art each end of the side rail is firmly attached by means of the rivets 39, l0, an
attachment plate l1 corresponding in size and outline to the interior of the outer side ,vall 2l ot1 the box bracket. The lovver portion of the plate is cut aivav to provide the vertically disposed downivardlj.v opening nctcli l? and in vertical alincmcnt therewith the metal of the plate is later-all;7 oiliset. as clcarl'v shoun aty in lig. (l. for a distance corresponding to the thickness of the side ivall Q1. the Width of the otisct portion corresponding to the Width of the slot QS so that the said oltset. portion d3 will enter from above and snugl)v tit vvithin the slot rl`he attachment between the plate il and the vertical portion 3S of the side rail is b v means ot` the offset 43, the apertures -l, 4:3 in the latter being provided for the accommodation lof the rivets 39 and 40.
rail is brought into position With the hori-v zontal portion 3T overlying the box bracket le and dropped vertically into position so that the plate 4l Will enter the said bracket, the offset. e3 entering the vslot 28 and the outer side ivall 2l of the bracket occupying a position, as indicated in Fig. 4, bet-Ween the plate 41 and the vertical portion38 of the side rail, As shown in Fig. 3, the edges of the plate 4l vvill bear snugly against the end walls of the bracket and the shoulders ot' the offset will likewise bear snugly against the side Walls of the slot 2S While the lovver edge of the offset vvill rest against the bottom vvall of the slot QS. The plate -ll being rigidlt7 attached to the rail, the rail itself ivill thus be supported along live lines of contact ivith the bracket and also by abutment of the end of the rail againstthe corner post whereby an)v angular morement of the parts is etfectuallv prevented.
