Application filed March 12, 1914.
T0 (122 whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JosErH DUKE, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of .Seattle, in the county of King and State of ilashington, have invented a new and Improved Bedstcad-Joint, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to metal bedstead joints for connecting the side bars or spring frame with the posts of the head and foot pieces, the joint being of that type which includes a box bracket fastened to a corner post and to which a side bar or bed spring bottom frame is detachably interlocked.
The general objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction and operation of bedstead joints of the char acter referred to so as to be reliable and ellicicnt in use, comparativelysimple and inexpensive to manufacture and of durable and substantial design.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of box bracket made in two sections fitting in interlocking relation and having suit-ably arranged lugs to engage with a spring frame or side bar of the bedstead.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a novel form of corner construction for a spring frame, such construc tion having special reference to the corner post bracket with which it detachably interlocks.
lVith such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates certain embodiments of the invention, and wherein similar characters oi reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead corner joint; Fig. 2 is a side View of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the box bracket removed; Fig. 4; is a similar View showing sections of the box bracket separate; Fig. dis a vertical sectional view on the line 5*5, Fig. .2; Fig. (5 is a horizontal section on the line 6-43, Fig. 5, with the spring frame removed; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of box bracket.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 29, 192%.
Serial No. 824,117.
corner post of a foot or bed piece of a bedstead and which has fastened thereto box bracket A that is adapted to interlock with one end of a side bar of a bedstead or with holds the spring bottom for the bedstead. The box bracket is made in two sections a and Z constructed as clearly shown in Fig. l. The section a comprises top and bottom plates 2 and 3 disposed parallel, a side plate l, and a curved end plate 5, the curvature of which corresponds to the curvature of the corner post 1. The top plate 2 has an shaped to conform to the end wall 5 of the section a. and this plate 13 fits between the flanges 10 and 11, as clearly shown in 3. A lug 14 extends upwardly from the side wall or plate 12 and cooperates with the lug (3 of the section so as to form a single upstanding lug which interlocks with the side bar of the bedstead or equivalent part of its spring frame. ll horizontally-extending lug or flange 15 projects from the bottom of the wall 12 and has a rectangular aperture 17, and adjacent one corner the wall 12 has an opening 18 which receives the lug 9 on the bottom of the section a. The end plates 5 and 13 of the sec tions a. and Z) have registering openings 19 through which extends a bolt 20, as shown in Fig. 8, such bolt having its headQl disposed in the bed post i and pro ecting out of the same and into the box bracket A. ll
reason of the curvature of the end wall of the box bracket a single bolt is sullicicnt to hold the bracket firmly attached to the post without any tendency to turn on the bolt as an axis. It will be noted that the sections (2 and 5 have several interlocking portions. First, the lug 1d fits in the recess 8 and the lug 9 enters the opening 18, while the end wall 13 fits between the flanges l0 and 11 and also fits against the curved wall 5.
The side bar 22 of the bedstead is shown as of angle iron, and the upper flange 23 the corner construction B of the frame that thereof has an opening 24 to receive the lug formed by the ears 6 and 14 of the two sections of the box bracket A. By this arrangement it is impossible for the two sections of the box bracket to be spread apart. The corner construction B includes a vertical plate or bracket 25 which is fastened by rivets or equivalent fastenings 26 against the outer face of the angle side bar 24, and this bracket 25, which is of any desired shape, has reinforcing or stifl'ening flanges 27 and 28 which are adapted to bear on the top of the side bar 22, and the lower end of the bracket 25 extends below the bottom edge 29 of the side bar so as to rest on the flange 15 of the box bracket A, and a tongue or lug 30 depends from'the bottom edge .29 and enters the opening 17 in the flange 15. It will thus be seen that the side bar 22 is connected with the box bracket by the lug 6, 14 on the top of the latter, and the lug 30 carried by the side bar. The corner bracket 25 has fastened thereto a transverse angle bar 31 which has apertures 32 for receiving the springs or wires of a spring bed bottom. The bracket member 25 has a laterally-extending ear 33 at its upper part to which the angle bar 31 is fastened by a bolt or equivalent means 34 In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the inner wall 4: of the box bracket A has means for fastening a cross bar 35 thereto, such means consisting of an opening 36 into which the bar extends. In forming the opening an ear 37 may be pressed out from the side of the box bracket and the cross bar 35 is preferably bolted thereto, as well as to the top of the box bracket, and for this purpose bolt-receiving openings 38 and 39 are provided.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains. and while I have described the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
