To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN H. B. REA, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Walker and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair-Seats; and I do declc re the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in metal chair bottoms or seats.

The object of the invention is to provide a cheaply constructed, strong and efficient metal chair bottom which adds materially to the strength and durability of the chair and forms a permanent bottom which will need no repairs during the life of the chair.

With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a chair equipped with this improved seat; Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows a, Fig. 3 is a similar view (on line 3-8 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of arrow 1), Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a similar view on line 5-5 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the blank from which this improved bottom is formed.

In the embodiment illustrated, a plate 1 of sheet metal, preferably steel, is struck out in the form shown in Fig. 6, with the edges sloped or inclined toward their centers, and the corners 2 thereof are folded over with their ends overlapping, as shown in Fig. 3.

A screw or bolt 3 is passed through the main body of the chair bottom and through these overlapping corners and secured in any suitable manner, a nut being here shown applied to its lower end, and the head of the screw arranged flush with the outer face of the bottom forming the seat of the chair. (See Fig. 1). By this construction a double walled chair seat or bottom is formed, the upper face or seat proper being formed by the body portion of the plate and the lower Specification of Letters Patent.

As shown, this seat is made square and the corners thereof cut out, as shown at L, to provide recesses for engaging the chair posts C, said recesses engaging the four posts of the chair which hold the bottom against lateral movement and the bottom spaces said posts and prevents collapse of the chair. While this bottom is shown square, it is obvious that it may be made oblong, or of any other suitable or desired shape to fit the chair or other piece of furniture to which it is to be applied.

The blank shown in Fig. 1, is substantially square with the side edges sloped inwardly toward the center to provide for spaces between the adjacent edges of the corners when in folded position, as is shown clearly in Fig. 8. A plurality of apertures 5 are preferably formed in the bottom for ventilation. It is, of course, understood that this bottom may be painted or finished in any suitable or desired manner and when applied to a chair will reliably brace and hold the parts thereof against collapse, the top and lower walls of said bottom adding greatly to its strength.

I claim as my invention:

1. A metal chair bottom composed of a plate folded to form continuous upper and lower faces, and means for securing them together.

2. A chair bottom composed of an angular metal plate having the corners thereof folded inwardly with their ends overlapping, and means for securing said overlapping ends together and to the body portion of the plate.

3. A chair bottom composed of a substantially square metal plate having its opposite co-rners folded inwardly with theirends overlapping, means for securing said ends together and to the body portion of the plate, said plate having recesses formed therein between the corners of the plate to lit the chair posts.
