SET lb.;
\/\/ITN, EVSSESII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
C [ARLES H. DUNHAM, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE DUNHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
STAKE-POCKET FOR PLATFORM-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,396, dated March 26, 1889.
Application filed SeptemberlQ, 1888. Serial No. 285,765. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. DUNHAM, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stake-Sockets' for Platform and other Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention Vhas for its object to provide a socket or holder for the stakes at the sides of platform and other cars which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction and capable of resisting the blows and rough usage to which it is liable to be subjected 5 and to these ends the invention consists in the improved socket which l will now proceed to describe and claim. y
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, Figure 1 represents a side view of a portion of a platform-car, showin g two of my improved stake-holders attached thereto. Fig. 2 represents a section on of Fig. l, looking toward the left. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. l, looking downwardly. Fig. 4 represents aperspective View of my improved stakeholder.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all of the gures.
In. carrying out my invention l make a socket, a., and its attaching -bolts b b in a single piece, the socket being a plate of metal bent to -form three sides, which with the side c of the car constitute the socket. The bolts b l) are formed on the ends of the socket portion and are of sufficient length to extend through the side piece, c, and are screwthreaded at their ends to engage nuts e e, whereby the socket is secured to the car. The socket is widened or extended above and below the bolts, and is provided with longitudinal corrugations 2, extending its entire length, said corrugations strengthening and stiifen* ingvthe socket, so that it may not be easily indented and distorted by blows which it is liable to receive in service. As here shown, the socket has three horizontal corrugations or beads-one at the center and the others near the edges of the socket.
l claim- The improved stake socket or holder composed of a single piece comprising the bent body and the screw-threaded bolts formed on the ends of said body, the latter being made wider than the diameter of the bolts and provided with longitudinal corrugations, whereby the body is strengthened and stiffened, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of September, A. D. 1888.
CHARLES H. DUNHAM.
