JAMES W. STONEHOUSE, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
STEEL-POST SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
Application filed October 20, 1914. Serial No. 867,636.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. STONE- rrousn, a citizen of the United States, resident of Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Steel-Post Signs; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention attached to the post. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the sign alone. Figs. 3, 1, 5 and 6 are perspective views of the sign body and of the fastening members. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section of the sign as shown in Fig. 1 with parts broken away.
The invention has relation to signs, and particularly to enameled steel post signs, having for its object the provision of an economical and durable sign for railroads, interurban and street car crossings, rights of way and other places, which will not be liable to become illegible through wear or vibration, and will require no restoration or repainting.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates a post, and 3 is the sign, made pref erably of enameled steel and having a bend 4:, usually a three-fourths inch right-angle bend, forming a marginal flange extending entirely around the sign.
5, 5 are the fastening members, usually three in number for each sign, located at top, bottom and midway of the sign, to which they are preferably electrically spotwelded, in order to avoid injury to the en amel by the use of screws, bolts or rivets, passing through the enameled face of the sign, and to make a unitary, well braced sign.
The top and bottom fastening members are located in contact with and connected to the top and bottom flange of the sign, forming extensions of the flange, and said members are provided with bent ends 8, 8, located in contact with and reinforcing the corners of the sign.
The intermediate fastening member is provided with a longitudinal right-angle flange 9, spot-welded to the sign at 7, 7, and with bent ends 10, located in contact with and bracing the marginal flange A.
Each fastening member is provided with a central seat 11. for the post, semicircular 1n the case of a round post, and the wall of the-seat is provided with a bent marginal flange 12, usually formed in sections or serrated as shown to enable the flange to be more easily bent angularly with relation to said member. In order to connect the fastening members to the post, a suitable clamp 13 is used, extending around the outside of the serrated flange of each fastening member, said serrated flange having contact with the post, and, when the bolts 14 of the clamp are drawn tightly, the sign will be made rigid with the post.
It is preferred that the serrated flanges of the top and bottom fastening members shall extend toward each other the clamps 13 engaging these flanges and being located between the same and the inner face of the sign, in close relation to the bodies of said members and hidden from view.
What I claim is:
1. A sign having a marginal flange, and a fastening member in contact with and connected to said flange, said member having a recess and a flange marginal to said recess and bent ends in contact with and reinforcing the corners of the sign.
2. A sign having a marginal flange, and top and bottom fastening members in contact with, connected to and forming extensions of said flange, said members having each a recess and a flange marginal to said recess and bent ends in contact with and reinforcing the corners of the sign.
3. A sign having a marginal flange, top and bottom fastening members connected to and forming extensions of said flange and provided with bent ends in contact with and reinforcing the corners of the sign, and an intermediate fastening member connected to the sign and having bent ends connected to and bracing said flange, each fastening member having a recess and a flange marginal to said recess. V
4. A sign having a marginal flange extending around the same, top and bottom fastening members connected to and forming extensions of said flange and provided with bent ends in contact with and reinforcing the corners of the sign, and an ining bent ends connected to and bracing said flange, each fastening member having a reoess and a serrated flange marginal to said recess.
5. The combination With a post, of a sign having a marginal flange, and a fastening member connected to said flange, said men her having a recess and a serrated flange marginal to said recess and a clamp engaging said post and the flange.
6. The combination With a post, of a sign having amarginal flange, extending around the same, top and bottom fastening members connected to and forming extensions of said flange and provided with bent ends in contact with and reinforcing vthe corners of the sign, an intermediate fastening member having a longitudinal flange, Welded to the sign and having bent ends connected to and bracing said flange; each fastening member having a recess and a serrated flange marginal to said recess the serrated flanges of the top and bottom fastening membersrextending toward each other, and a clamp for each fastening member engaging said post a and theserrated fiange.
In testimony whereof I aihx my signature, in presence of tii'o Witnesses.
