FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
- Application filed July 8, 1913. Serial No. 777,931.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known-that I, HENRY KRoPr BENTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pettis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a post and one object of the present invention is to provide novel means whereby the line wires of the fence may be assembled with the post either firmly or for longitudinal sliding movement.
Another object of the invention is to provide a post to the opposite faces of which wires may be attached readily, thereby permitting the use of a smooth wire on one side of the fence and a barbed wire on the other side of the fence.
The invention aims, further, to improve generally and to enhance the utility of, devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a transverse section of the structure forming the subject of this application. Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan of one washer; Fig. 4 is a plan showing another form of washer; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the staple; Fig. 6 is a sectional detail corresponding to Fig. 1 but showing a slightly different form of the invention.
In carrying out the invention and referring particularly to Fig. 1, there is shown a post 1, which is fashioned from metal. The post 1 comprises a body 34 and projecting flanges 35 and 36. In the flanges 35 and 36 are openings 5 which taper toward their ends. The flanges 36 and 35 are concaved slightly toward a common central plane, thereby forming projecting ribs 44 at the ends of the body 34. The longitudinal edges of the flanges 35 and 36 are curved to form ribs 45.
The manner of holding the line wires in place will now be entered into and described. Referring to Fig. 1, a smooth wire 39 is disposed opposite to the flange 36 and is supported by the adjacent ribs 44 and 45, a barbed wire 40 being similarly disposed with respect to the flange 35. Referring to the wire 39 as typical, a staple 41 is extended around the wire 39 and is passed through the opening 5. The staple 41 extends through a washer 43 which may be of any desired form. As shown in Fig. 3 and as designated by 43 the washer may be of circular outline, but as shown at 43 in Fig. 4 it may be of polygonal outline. The staple is then twisted and the wire 39 is bent across the ribs 44 and 45. A bend is formed in the wire 39, which bend registers in the opening 5 of the flange 36. In this manner, the wire 39 is securely held in place against longitudinal movement. In the case of the wire 40, the same is shown as loosely mounted in the tie 41, for longitudinal movement, and it is to be understood that either wire may be left loose for longitudinal movement or may be secured as hereinbefore described. In the place of the washer 43 a longitudinal wire 42, as shown in Fig. 6 may be employed, the staples being twisted around these longitudinal wires. Parts previously described are indicated in Fig. 6 by corresponding numerals with the suflix a. Two smooth wires 39 may be employed and the flanges of the post are reversed as compared with Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 2 it is to be observed that one face of the fence post may be equipped with a smooth wire, the other face of the post being equipped with a barbed wire, depending upon the nature of the stock upon each side of the fence.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a fence post comprising a body and flanges projecting in opposite directions from the longitudinal edges of the body, the flanges being struck inwardly toward each other between the outer longitudinal edges of the flanges and the outer longitudinal edges of the body, to form longitudinal reinforcing ribs at the outer longitudinal edges of the flanges and at the outer longitudinal edges of the body, each flange having an opening;
ribs and having a bend removably seated.
in the slot and held therein against movement both longitudinally and transversely of the post; and a securing device engaging the bend and located in the slot.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 15 asmy own, I havehereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY KROPP BENTE.
