UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WIRE-FENCE TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
katentec'l. June 5, 1906.
Application filed August 31, 1905- Serial No. 276,644.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. MILLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-fence ties, and its object is to provide a tie that is securely fastened in place with its ends within the plane of the fence, to provide a tie that is adapted to be placed in position by machinery, and to provide the same with various new and useful features, as hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a view taken at right angles to Fig. 1 and Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.
1 represents the horizontal wire, and 2 the vertical wire, of a fence arranged transversely in the usual way.
My improved tie consists of a piece of wire engaging the Wires 1 and 2 and surrounding the crossing of the same. The middle portion of this tie is bent substantially in a circle and arranged to surround the crossing of the wires 1 and 2, engaging the front side of the wire 2 and the rear side of the wire 1. The ends of this tie are crossed where they meet between the wires 1 and 2, and each end of the tie is wound one or more times around the respective horizontal and vertical wiresl and 2 close to the circular portion of the tie,
and terminates within the plane of the same, whereby its ends are prevented from projecting outward and engaging any body moving in close proximity to the fence. I have shown the ends of this tie as being wound once around the fence-wires, which is sufficient to secure the same under ordinary conditions; but it is obvious that the ends may be wound only partially around the fencewires or extended and wound as many times around the fence-wires as may be deemed advisable or necessary to secure the same without departing from my invention. It will be observed that this tie is well adapted to be applied by machinery for that the ends are of equal length the circular bend is first formed in the middle of the tie, and then the ends are crossed and wound around the fence wires.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a wire fence, in combination with crossed fence-Wires, a tie having its middle part in circular form and having its ends crossed and secured by being wound or coiled around the respective fence-Wires outside the circuit of said middle part.
2. In a wire fence, in combination with crossed fence-wires, a tie having a circular middle portion and equal end portions, said end portions being crossed between the fencewires and secured by being wound or coiled around the respective fence-wires outside the circuit of said middleportion, and terminating within the plane of the same.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE R. MILLS.
